"A death-mask from Langoona!"
―Jiliac bellows in outrage upon receiving a death-mask as a gift[1]

Langoonan deathmasks were masks created by the Langoonan species that were considered art by some Hutts. They were decorated with gems and precious metals.

History[]

Langoona deathmasks were masks created by the Langoonan[2] species native to the planet Langoona in the region of the galaxy known as Hutt Space. The masks were made on islands within the warm oceans of Langoona where they were decorated with semi-precious gems and inlays of silver, gold, platinum and iridescent shells from the ocean. By the year 1 BBY, the masks were considered works of art worth a large amount. In 1 BBY, the Hutt leader of the Besadii Kajidic, Durga Besadii Tai, gave a Langoonan deathmask to the Hutt leader of the Desilijic kajidic, Jiliac Desilijic Tiron, as a sign of his intentions to kill her for having his father Aruk Besadii Aora murdered. Jiliac smashed the mask against a wall before Durga challenged her to combat under the Hutt Old Law and killed her.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

A Langoonan death mask first appeared in Rebel Dawn the third book in the Han Solo Trilogy written by A. C. Crispin and released in 1998. Deathmask is also spelt as death-mask once in the book, but this article uses the more common spelling. The name of the species who made them was revealed to be Langoonan in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas written by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace.
