The Drengir were a species of sentient, amorphous plant-like carnivores who threatened to reap harvest across the Galactic Frontier in the aftermath of the Great Disaster during the High Republic Era. The Drengir had numerous tentacles as well as an array of teeth. Although they lacked the scheming nature and power structure of the anarchistic Nihil marauders, the Drengir were a danger to the galaxy and the Jedi, and one amongst the latter had their fate inescapably linked to the creatures.

Biology and appearance

An amorphous carnivorous sentient species that resembled plants^[3] and was strongly aligned with the dark side of the Force,^[2] the Drengir were capable of healing from most wounds inflicted by blasters or lightsabers quickly, although they could be killed by exposure to the vacuum of space. When immobile, the Drengir were easily mistaken for trees.^[2] Blue-green in color and with an array of teeth, the Drengir had numerous tentacles and thorns.^[3] The latter secreted deadly poisons. The species was capable of speaking Galactic Basic.^[2]

Society and culture

The Drengir were intelligent, but cared primarily about devouring non-botanical lifeforms.^[2] During the High Republic Era, while they lacked the scheming nature and power structure of the anarchistic Nihil marauders,^[1] they aimed to reap harvest across the^[3] Galactic Frontier.^[1]

History

Thousands of years before the High Republic Era, the Drengir were encountered on a planet by the ancient Amaxine warriors, who built a relay to the planet so they could fight and defeat the sentient plants. However, the Amaxines failed, and the Drengir managed to infiltrate the space station at the heart of the relay system, forcing the warriors to abandon it. Sometime later, the station was discovered by the Sith, who eventually bound the Drengir present on the station with a set of four Force-dampening statues.^[2]

The space station eventually became a waypoint for Byne Guild pilots during the High Republic Era. In the aftermath of the Great Disaster, the statues were discovered and removed by some Jedi stranded at the Amaxine station who misidentified their purpose, believing they were containing a dark side influence within them instead of suppressing it.^[2]

The Drengir first appeared in the short story "A Bitter Harvest," which was published in the Target-exclusive edition of Dark Legends on August 30, 2020.^[4] The Drengir were created for the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative, and were first identified on a news article released on October 29, 2020, on StarWars.com. The concept for the vegetation-based villains came from a sketch by the long-time Star Wars concept artist Iain McCaig in the early days of The High Republic's development. Amongst McCaig's sketches of monsters, author Cavan Scott found inspiration for what would become the Drengir from a creature that was "covered in vines and creepers." Scott quickly shared a document outlining their possible culture and background to the rest of the members on the High Republic initiative, drawing on research he had been reading about how real-world plants thrive and communicate with each other.^[1]
