"You don't know him. What Ben's had to deal with. I don't care what he said. He would never do this. Ben doesn't need to be hunted. He needs our help."
―Tai to Voe[src]

Following the destruction of Luke Skywalker's Jedi temple, Ben Solo engaged in a duel with the three Jedi students Voe, Hennix, and Tai at the Elphrona Outpost. They wanted to investigate his role in the temple's destruction and Skywalker's purported death. Solo was determined to seek the Knights of Ren on the planet Varnak. He killed Hennix in self-defense, prompting Voe and Tai to resolve to hunt down their former Jedi comrade.

Prelude[edit | edit source]

"Why? Why? Why did you do it?"
―Ben Solo, regarding Luke Skywalker[src]

Following the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker sought to rebuild the Jedi Order. He recruited several Jedi students including his nephew Ben Solo.[5] Skywalker also gained several other students including the humans Voe and Tai and the Quarren Hennix. Due to his strong connection to the Force, Solo excelled in his Jedi training.[6]

However, the dark sider Snoke took an interest in Solo, concerning Master Skywalker. While peering into the mind of his nephew one night, Skywalker saw Snoke's dark machinations and the death and despair that he would bring. In a moment of pure instinct, Skywalker ignited his lightsaber to kill his nephew, seeking to prevent the destruction that he would bring. However, Skywalker realized that it was only a moment and was overcome by shame and guilt. Unfortunately for Skywalker, it was too late and Solo awoke and ignited his lightsaber in self defense. Believing that his uncle was out to kill him, Solo collapsed his hut on top of his uncle.[7]

A confused and despondent Ben emerged from the hut. Then, a massive lightning storm destroyed the Jedi temple, killing many of the other pupils. Shortly after the Jedi students Voe, Tai, and Hennix returned on their starship Verity. They confronted Ben, who told them that Skywalker had tried to kill him. The three other Jedi did not believe him and attempted to question him. Following a brief confrontation, Solo wounded Hennix and fled aboard his ship Grimtaash.[1]

The other Jedi gave chase but Solo managed to damage one of the Verity's engines and find Snoke, who posed as a kindly and wise figure.[1] With the encouragement of Snoke, Ben sought out Ren, the leader of the Knights of Ren, a dark side cult. Solo traveled to the Jedi outpost on Elphrona where he contact Ren using a discarded helmet from an earlier encounter. Ren instructed him to meet him on Varnak. Before he could leave, he was confronted by Hennix, Tai, and Voe, who had managed to track him down.[6]

The duel[edit | edit source]

"Ben, please. The story you're telling us…it can't possibly be true. There must be more to what happened. The Temple, Master Luke, the other students…just talk to us. It can't be as bad as what you're saying."
Tai to Ben Solo[src]

Upon arriving, Ben engaged in a lightsaber duel with his former classmates. Tai, who had been on friendly terms with Ben, tried to probe his mind but Ben hurled him aside. Furious that the other Jedi had followed him but unwilling to kill them, Ben fled to a high rock outside the outpost. Voe, who had harbored a rivalry with Ben and believed that he had murdered the Jedi at the temple, Force jumped after him.[4]

Hennix, who was unable to keep up with Voe, tried to warn her not to go too far. The two soon cornered him at the top of the rock. Angered that Voe had denounced him as a murderer, Ben pushed her off the rock but was soon overcome by guilt and regret. Ben tried to pull Voe to safety but failed. Hennix, who thought that Ben had sent Voe to her death, attacked Ben in a moment of rage with his lightsaber.[4]

Ben killed Hennix in self-defense with a lightsaber strike. Meanwhile, Tai managed to catch Voe's fall. Before the two could aid Hennix, Ben caught up with them and used the Force to hurl them into the Elphrona Jedi outpost. To prevent them from following them, he collapsed two statues on top of them.[4]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

"I…I need somewhere to go. Snoke said maybe you would…"
"Snoke, huh? Yeah, okay. Come to Vanrak [sic] in the Mid Rim. We'll be there for a bit."
―Solo and Ren[src]

Ben Solo then traveled to Varnak where he met up with Ren and the Knights of Ren. Ben recounted his story to the Knights, seeking to earn a place among their ranks by scoring a "good kill." However, Ren deemed Hennix's death as insufficient since Ben had not killed Hennix intentionally. Still, Ren allowed Ben to join their group as a means of finding a way to earn a "good death."[4]

Meanwhile, Tai and Voe freed themselves from the rubble of the Jedi outpost. Having learnt from his mind probe that Ben was seeking the Knights of Ren, Tai accepted Voe's view that Ben was lost. Deeming Ben lost, the two decided to avenge Hennix's death.[4]
