The EV-series medical droid,[2] also known as the A-series medical droid,[5] or the A4 laboratory assistant droid,[6] was a model of medical droid[2] based on the EV-series chassis that was manufactured by MerenData.[1] Beginning their operational lives as EV-series supervisor droids, the company refitted them[3] as cheap medical units[1] in an attempt to salvage the EV-series.[3] However, their skeletal frames hardly encouraged trust in most patients, and the model was largely a failure.[1] The Confederacy of Independent Systems purchased and retrofitted an EV-series medical droid designated EV-A4-D,[3] gifting him to General Grievous to serve as the cyborg's surgeon and cybernetics repair technician.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The EV-series medical droid first appeared in "Lair of Grievous," the tenth episode of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season,[7] which originally aired on December 12, 2008.[8] It was designed by Atsushi Takeuchi[9] of Production IG, who also designed the show's incarnation of Grievous[10] and directed "Lair of Grievous."[7] The EV-series medical droid was first identified in EV-A4-D's Databank entry on StarWars.com.[2]
In the original episode guide for "Lair of Grievous," EV-A4-D was described as a modified supervisor droid.[11] However, his Databank entry identified him as an medical droid.[2] Star Wars: Build Your Own R2-D2 20 would later establish that the EV-series medical droid was based on the chassis of the EV-series supervisor droid,[1] with Star Wars: Build Your Own R2-D2 53 further explaining that the medical droids were supervisor droids before being refitted.[3]
