The Echani were a sentient species that lived in the galaxy.[1] They shared their name with a form of martial art.[2] During the High Republic Era, when the Nihil attacked Valo, an Echani man who had come to attend the Valo Republic Fair had a run-in with Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh's pet targons, nearly being mauled before Jedi Master Stellan Gios held the large cats off so the man could flee.[1]

The Echani were first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the 2021 novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, written by Cavan Scott as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[3] The Echani originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.[4]
