"Just remember–tell your friends! Tell your enemies! I stand behind all my products! One-hundred-percent pure, satisfaction guaranteed!"
―Elan Sel'Sabagno to Boba Fett[6]

Elan Sel'Sabagno, also known as Elan Sleazebaggano, was a Balosar male medical student who came to the planet Coruscant seeking out a medical degree. He fell in with bad crowd and stole medical supplies and equipment, which he gave to the spice lord Hat Lo. Sel'Sabagno eventually stole drug supplies to give to him and became a slythmonger. A best-seller of his were death sticks, drugs that shortened the life of the user. He himself became addicted to death sticks, but his Balosar physiology gave him resistance to the drug. They sold in the Outlander Club located in the Uscru Entertainment District of Coruscant.

In the Outlander Club, he unsuccessfully tried to sell Rancor nail blades to bounty hunter Jango Fett and death sticks to Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi, however used the force to mind-trick the slythmonger into going home and rethinking his life. In 19 BBY, Sel'Sabagno drove around the bounty hunter Boba Fett in an airspeeder from the Jedi Temple to the cantina Sign of the Tri-Forked Tongue, trying to sell many products to Fett, and endangering their lives while doing so. After Fett finished his business in the cantina, he then drove Fett back to the Jedi Temple, as the Balosar was his only option. On the way, he gave Fett a saberdart. After the rise of the Galactic Empire, Sel'Sabgano unsuccesfully tried to tell the Jedi fugitives Drake Lo'gaan and Zonder about the danger of death sticks.

Biography[]

A once promising career[]

Coruscant-EotE

Elan Sel'Sabagno came to the planet Coruscant.

The young Balosar Elan Sel'Sabagno, known to almost everyone as Elan Sleazebaggano,[7] was a medical student[8] who came to the Core Worlds planet[9] Coruscant[3] seeking out a medical degree[7] as one of the top students in his year. He studied on the planet,[2] had a place in medical school, and a promising career ahead of him. However, the popular Coruscant view that Balosars were untrustworthy dragged him down. His ancestry attracted the wrong type of attention and the Balosar fell in with the wrong crowd.[3]

Before Sel'Sabagno knew where he was, he was stealing medical equipment[3] and supplies,[7] which he passed off to the[3] up-and-coming[7] spice lord Hat Lo.[3] The credits he received helped with hard student life, and he soon went to stealing valuable drug supplies, which he also gave to Lo. These thefts accelerated his slippery path towards dark days.[3] When one of Sel'Sabagno's instructors accused him of stealing, the Balosar assaulted the instructor and went into hiding in the labyrinth-like undercities of Coruscant.[7]

Sel'Sabagno had turned his medical career into the career of a slythmonger, a distributor of pharmaceutical supplies in the entertainment districts of Coruscant.[2] Now a barfly, he engaged the seedier side of Coruscant nightlife,[8] frequented shadowy nightclubs in the Uscru Entertainment District of Coruscant[10] and dealt the drug Spice.[11] The Balosar was able to put his rudimentary medical training to use behind the bar of a seedy nightclub. He found that after a few drinks, it was easy to talk patrons into buying the drugs glitterstim or[7] his best seller,[2] death sticks, which he peddled to Hat Lo. The slythmonger had also turned into a death stick addict himself, sharing the drugs with his coterie of thrill-seeking club hoppers.[7] The death sticks sold at the Outlander Club,[3] a nightclub and gambling hall in the Uscru Entertainment District,[12] due to their quality. As such, the customers of the club tolerated him despite the fact he was a deadly blot on it.[3] He loitered around the bar of the club looking for potential customers.[13]

Outlander encounters[]

"You wanna buy some death sticks?"
"You don't want to sell me death sticks.

―Elan Sel'Sabagno and Obi-Wan Kenobi, in which the latter uses a mind trick on the former[5]
WannaBuyNails

Sel'Sabagno attempts to sell Rancor nail blades to Jango Fett.

In 22 BBY,[14] Sel'Sabagno was inside the Outlander Club at the same time as the bounty hunters Jango Fett and Zam Wesell. He attempted to sell Rancor nail blades, weapons crafted from the nails of Rancors, to Fett, blocking Wesell's way. The bounty hunter refused, pushing Sel'Sabagno aside. This caused the slythmonger to stumble backwards into a table of droids.[15]

Shortly after,[16] Sel'Sabagno was once again in the club, sitting at the bar. He approached the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi,[17] thinking he was a visiting patron.[10] With a death stick in hand,[17] he asked Kenobi he wanted to buy drugs off of himself. Sel'Sabagno then added on that "nobody's got better death sticks than Elan Sleazebaggno," with an evil smile.[18] To any respectable person, the Balosar would have been an annoyance, but to Kenobi, he was just an unwelcome distraction. The Jedi didn't want Sel'Sabagno to be put in danger or peddle his wares elsewhere. Kenobi, keeping his eyes forward, did a slight gesture[19] of influence[20] with his hand and mind-tricked the slythmonger into not selling his death sticks to him.[19] Sel'Sabagno then used a slight of hand[21] to tuck the death stick into the sleeve of his overcoat.[17]

Sleazebaggano mind tricked

Elan Sel'Sabagno was mind tricked by Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Sel'Sabagno was unaware that the Jedi was manipulating his mind. He looked slightly confused, then thoughtful as he responded that he didn't want to sell death sticks to Kenobi. The Jedi then again mind-tricked him into going home and rethinking his life. The Balosar left his drink behind and walked away from the bar.[19] He exited the club, walking along Vos Gesal Street back to his home to rethink his life.[22] Kenobi's trick of the force led him to better things, though he never knew where the inspiration to change came from. All he knew was that he attempted to sell death sticks to a punter and left the club, never returning.[3] Elan saw the error of his criminal ways, though only for a while.[11] Unfortunately for the Outlander Club, more slythmongers were there to take Sel'Sabagno's place.[3] The interaction became famous[11] and rumors about Sel'Sabagno going home and changing his ways circulated.[10]

Driving Boba[]

"I happen to be the provider of the very finest death sticks in the galaxy, very reasonably priced, very–"
"Stop! Get me to the Tri-Forked Tongue. NOW!

―Elan Sel'Sabagno and Boba Fett[6]
Jedi Temple spires ROTS

Sel'Sabagno picked up Boba Fett from the Jedi Temple.

In 19 BBY,[23] Lo sent Sel'Sabagno in a bright red airspeeder to pick up Boba Fett, Jango Fett's son, from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and bring him to his cantina, Sign of the Tri-Forked Tongue in the Coruscant underworld. Sel'Sabagno waited for Fett inside his airspeeder near Fett's ship, the Slave 1, on the landing dock of the temple. Fett immediately recognized the Balosar as being Sel'Sabagno, to his dismay.[6]

As Fett jumped into the airspeeder, Sel'Sabagno introduced himself, his antennapalps wiggling with pride. He told Fett that "flying was his game" and asked Fett if he could interest him in some Polordian smootdust. Sel'Sabagno took out the smootdust, and waved it enticingly around Fett's face. Fett then grabbed Sel'Sabagno's shoulder, remarking that he wasn't interested in his cheap contraband. He then instructed the Balosar to take him the Sign of the Tri-Forked Tongue, fast. Sel'Sabagno nodded eagerly and the smootdust disappeared. Sel'Sabagno punched the control panels of the airspeeder and it left the docking platform.[6]

Sel'Sabagno drove Boba Fett to the Sign of the Tri-Forked Tongue

The Balosar commented that Fett looked like a discerning bounty hunter, and almost without taking a breath, offered to sell him tortapo-shell shades. He went on about the features of the shades before Fett ordered him to be silent, tightening his grip on his shoulder. Sel'Sabagno agreed, with his antennapalps twitching nervously. Even after Fett's order, Sel'Sabagno continued to go on. Fett groaned and thought to himself that the Balosar was relentless and wondered where his blaster was when he needed it. The bounty hunter menacingly stated that the trip better be short and Sel'Sabagno obliged. The airspeeder then raced away from the temple.[6]

As the two approached the Galactic Senate building, Sel'Sabagno explained to Fett that the building is where the galaxy's most important business takes place, but before he could explain where they were going, the airspeeder gave a sudden lurch. Without warning, the airspeeder dived straight down between kilometer-high buildings. The bounty hunter shouted at the Balosar as another speeder came towards them. At the last moment, Fett got the airspeeder to veer sharply to one side. Fett caught a glimpse of the angry pilot of the other speeder, glaring at Sel'Sabagno's bright red one. The Balosar then calmly removed Fett's hand from the airspeeder's controls.[6]

Sel'Sabagno then continued his speech, stating that the Coruscant underground is where the galaxy's most important unofficial business takes place. Fett then corrected him, stating that he was talking about the gangland underground. The airspeeder sped down into the lower levels of Coruscant's Galactic City, which Fett called Hat Lo's territory. Sel'Sabagno then retorted that it was also his territory, and that he sold the finest, reasonably priced death sticks in the galaxy. Before he could finish, Fett shouted at him to stop and to get him to the cantina. The rest of the ride passed silently, with Sel'Sabagno occasionally sighing noisily. His antennapalps didn't stop wriggling as though he was trying to sell Fett some highly illegal Nkllonian Lava Extract, one hundred percent pure.[6] At last, the airspeeder began to slow, and in front of them was the Sign of the Tri-Forked Tongue. A bored sounding Sel'Sabagno announced the name of the establishment to Fett. Sel'Sabagno didn't know why the bounty hunter bothered with the place, telling Fett that no one goes there anymore. Fett snapped that he did and exited the airspeeder. The Balosar handed him his business card, asking Fett to call him when Lo is unable to provide him with what the bounty hunter needed. Boba added that contacting him was unlikely, but he still took the card. The airspeeder then roared off, wildly moving between alarmed passersby.[6]

The drive back[]

"Yo! Wassup!"
―Elan Sel'Sabagno to Boba Fett[6]

After Boba Fett had finished his business with Hat Lo in the cantina, Sel'Sabagno and his airspeeder hovered near the buildings entrance. He gestured for Fett to hop in beside him. The dismayed bounty hunter looked around, seeing no other means of transportation. Sel'Sabagno urged Fett to get in, telling him that he'll get him there faster than anyone else could. The resigned Fett climbed into the airspeeder, glowering at the Balosar. Fett threatened Sel'Sabagno with death if he tried to sell something to him. Sel'Sabagno yanked the controls and airspeeder shot up through the high-rise canyons of Coruscant. The Balosar told Fett he wouldn't dream of selling him something, especially not something highly illegal and fatality toxic like a saberdart.[6]

KaminoSaberdart-BHC

Sel'Sabagno posessed a saberdart.

Holding tightly to his seat as the airspeeder narrowly avoided hitting a building, Fett inquired about the saberdart. Sel'Sabagno stated he never said anything about a saberdart, before waving at a speeder going past them full of young, willowy Dathomir witches. The witches stared back at him with ill-disguised disgust. The speeder shot upwards as Sel'Sabagno replied that possessing a saberdart is a criminal offense, and that he, of course, is a respected member of Corsucant's business community. The Balosar took one hand from the controls and materialized a saberdart from what seemed like thin air. The airspeeder wobbled dangerously while doing so. He gave the saberdart to Fett as a token of his great admiration for his great bounty hunting skills, and added on that Fett should put in a good word for the Balosar to the[6] Hutt crime lord[24] Jabba Desilijic Tiure, if he felt inclined. Fett took the saberdart, looking at it suspiciously. Fett tried to inquire about where he got the saberdart, but was cut off. Sel'Sabagno stated if he did tell Fett where he got it, the bounty hunter would kill him, adding that it was real, and that Fett should trust him.[6]

As they approached the Jedi Temple, the airspeeder began to slow. Fett quickly shoved the saberdart into his utility belt and the airspeeder came to a stop on the landing platform. Fett exited the airspeeder and grudgingly thanked the Balosar. Sel'Sabagno looked up at Fett and wriggled his antennapalps. He told Fett to remember to tell his friends, and his enemies, that he stands behind his products, one-hundred-percent pure, satisfaction guaranteed. With a farewell wave of his antennapalps, Sel'Sabagno powered up his airspeeder, shooting in reverse. It rocketed off into the haze of Coruscant as Fett watched it go.[6]

The dangers of death sticks[]

"They call them "death sticks" for a reason..."
―Elan Sel'Sabagno[25]

Shortly after and the rise of the Galactic Empire,[26] Sel'Sabagno attempted to tell the Jedi fugitives Drake Lo'gaan and Zonder about the dangers of death sticks[25] on Vos Gesal Street[22] after they ran out of the Outlander Club from Stormtroopers. The pair didn't acknowledge Sel'Sabagno and pushed him out the way, hurting him. The unsuccessful Balosar then remarked that he needed to rethink his life.[25]

Personality and traits[]

"I live to please. But maybe, you'll consider–"

―Elan Sel'Sabagno and Boba Fett[6]
Elan Sleazebaggano

Elan Sel'Sabagno was a sordid and slimy Balosar.

Being a sordid[4] and slimy lowlife,[1] Sel'Sabagno didn't care that other species couldn't shrug off the effects of death sticks,[7] though by the time of the Galactic Empire he tried to spread awareness of the drug's harmful nature to Lo'gaan and Zondar.[25] Sel'Sabagno did nothing to dispel the stereotypes that Balosars were scoundrels and shifty cheats.[2] Though he thought that his oily style, embarrassing dance moves, and occasional sleights of hand, which he learned during his time with a troupe of trickster players, brought him popularity, only the quality of his Death sticks made him popular in the seedy Coruscant scene.[27] In actuality, the clubbers viewed him as an awkward, oily, embarrassing parasite.[2] While driving around Boba Fett, Sel'Sabagno annoyed and angered the bounty hunter with the barrage of offers.[6]

Sel'Sabagno was addicted to death sticks, drugs that shorted the user's lifespan. However, his Balosar physiology gave him a heightened resistance to the more damaging side effects of the drug.[2] Despite his physiology, years or hard living in the undercity of Coruscant had weakened his health.[4] A male of the species,[2] he had flexible antennapalps[20] that twirled up from his head like curly horns.[18] He could conceal the antennapalps with[20] his thick brown hair,[3] worn in a stylishly filthy[19] petrified hairstyle.[20] He also had brown eyes, and light skin. He stood at 1.78 meters[3] and weighed 70 kilograms.[4] The Balosar spoke with a guttural voice.[18]

Skills and abilities[]

Sel'Sabagno was one of the top medical students within his year.[3] The slythmonger was knowledgeable on many subjects, including alien species, biology, and organized crime.[7] His rudimentary knowledge of alien psychology was used to hustle contraband.[27] He had some skill with diplomacy, gathering information, and computer use.[7] Sel'Sabagno could speak and write Balosur,[7] the language of his species.[28] He could also speak in Basic, Huttese, and Twi'leki.[7] During his time with a troupe of trickster players, he learned how to do slights of hand,[27] becoming an adept.[21] With little combat experience, his fighting style was deliberately clumsy and unpredictable,[4] though he did have proficiency with blaster pistols and simple weapons.[7] According to Sel'Sabagno, "flying was his game" but while using an airspeeder, he put himself and Boba Fett in danger many times.[6]

Equipment[]

"I never said that, because to possess a saberdart is a criminal offence. and I, of course, am a respected member of Coruscant's business community. But yes, I do have one."
―Elan Sel'Sabagno to Boba Fett[6]
Deathsticks-DB

Sel'Sabagno sold death sticks.

Sel'Sabagno wore a long dark overcoat that concealed his illegal chemicals, a casual beige shirt, baggy white pants,[1] a black belt with a holster,[29] a fashionable choker, and shoes that contained secret storage compartments for contraband.[1] Sel'Sabagno also possessed a blaster pistol,[29] a sharp vibroblade,[4] multiple Rancor nail blades,[15] flashy clothes, and a stash of illegal substances that included ryll spice, glitterstim, and death sticks.[7]

By 19 BBY,[23] Sel'Sabagno had come into possession of a saberdart, which he could not reveal the origin of, for fear of being killed by Boba Fett. Other material he had at this time included tortapo-shell shades and the shimmering green Polordian smootdust, which he called "one hundred percent pure" before being cut off by Fett. He utilized a bright red airspeeder when driving around Fett. After exiting the airspeeder, Sel'Sabagno gave Fett a business card. On the card read "ELAN SLEAZEBAGGNO: WHEN ONLY THE BEST AND SLIMIEST WILL DO!"[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Creation[]

"Elan Sleazebaggano was altered in postproduction, too late for toys in the works to change. The proper Elan has no ears. Reference photography didn't have this digital alteration. Toys had a running change to remove his ears."
Pablo Hidalgo[30]

Elan Sel'Sabagno was created for the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[17] with concept art of the character being created.[2] Sel'Sabagno was portrayed by actor Matt Doran[17] and the film released on May 16, 2002.[31] The Outlander Club scenes including Doran were shot at Fox Studios, Sydney on July 17, 2000.[32] The character was named by Star Wars creator George Lucas.[33] Although Sel'Sabagno has ears in production photos,[20] ILM ultimately removed them and replaced them with antennapalps,[30] carefully matched to Doran's head movements,[2] for the film after George Lucas saw what computer-graphic antennae looked like.[34] Prior to the film's release, Doran's casting as an "unsavory troublemaker" was revealed in the fifty-first issue of Star Wars Insider, in the article Meet the New Stars of Episode II.[35]

Continuity[]

Sel'Sabagno first appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones comic series, penciled by Jan Duursema and published by Dark Horse Comics[36] and released on April 17, 2002.[37] The character was later identified by the novelization of the film, written by R.A. Salvatore[18] and released on April 23, 2002.[38] The Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary reveals that Sel'Sabagno could conceal his antennapalps under his hair,[20] explaining away photos of the character without the computer-generated effects.[2] His real last name of Sel'Sabagno was revealed in the tenth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine.[7] A figure of Sel'Sabagno was produced by the toy company Hasbro in 2003 for their Saga toyline.[39] The figure originally included ears, but a resculpted version without the ears was later produced.[40]

In the[4] 2011[41] young readers book Star Wars: Head-to-Head Tag Teams, written by Pablo Hidalgo, a scenario in which Sel'Sabagno is partnered with the identical twin sisters Brea and Senni Tonnika inside an alley in the Uscru Entertainment District against the con artists Dannl Faytonni and Achk Med-Beq, and the Besalisk Dexter Jettster. Sel'Sabagno's team loses as Jettster makes all the difference, The Balosar is overpowered, and the sisters flee.[4] In 2014,[42] John Jackson Miller, the author of the novel Kenobi, revealed that the scene with Sel'Sabagno and Kenobi was one of his favorite scenes inside the one hundred fourty-seventh issue of Star Wars Insider. Miller described the scene as a funny off-hand moment, adding that the watchers are led to wonder how many other people Kenobi and other Jedi have nudged to the right path.[43]
