An emitter matrix was a device that could be added to a lightsaber. It improved use against droids.[1] Inverting the emitter matrix would cause the lightsaber to backfire and explode, potentially killing anybody in the vicinity.[2] In 20 BBY[3] Mark IV architect droid Professor Huyang informed Jedi youngling Petro that the only person he would kill with his lightsaber was himself as he rushed through the construction of his lightsaber without following the diagram and inverted the emitter matrix. As a result, Huyang instructed the youngling to restart the building process of his lightsaber.[2]
