- "They know Evereni called Espri—"to have"—and Rad—"to laugh.""
- ―Marda Ro in her journal, regarding Vika and Velya Faer

Marda Ro (pictured), mentioned Espri in her journal.
The Espri were a group of Evereni whose name meant "to have" in the language of their species. The siblings Vika and Velya Faer of the species' Faer family knew Evereni bearing the name Espri.[1] At some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[2] the two Faers encountered Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of the marauder group who would eventually become the Nihil.[3] Wanting to know more about[1] her[4] species, she asked them to tell her more about the Evereni and learned, among other things, of the Espri.[1]
Later, Ro mentioned them as one of the things she learned from the Faers while recounting her encounter with them for a journal entry she recorded for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[5] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the message where the Espri were mentioned.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
The Espri were mentioned in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1] In an interview, Gratton revealed that[3] she[6] finds the lack of naming conventions in Star Wars frustrating. He decided to give Evereni a naming convention, which was one of the first parts of the story they created.[3]

- ↑ The segment of "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" depicting a Jedi's death onboard the Gaze Electric takes place around 379 BBY per reasoning here. Marda Ro met the Faers after the Jedi's death; therefore, she must have met them no earlier than 379 BBY.

As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force establishes she introduced Marchion Ro to Marda Ro's journal, he must have listened to it by that year.
