The Ethics Committee was a Galactic Senate legislative committee of the Galactic Republic, and was considered a spiritual partner of the Judiciary Committee's Internal Activities Committee. The Ethics Committee had the power to investigate senators and other government officials, and in order to do so could issue subpoenas for witnesses for hearings.
Although similar to the Internal Activities Committee, the Ethics Committee was restricted to giving censures and could not file recommendations for criminal charges. Despite that, censures by the committee usually created enough public pressure to force a criminal investigation and a resignation or call for a Vote of No Confidence. The committee was active during the Clone Wars, which lasted from 22 BBY to 19 BBY.
Behind the scenes
The Ethics Committee was introduced in the new Star Wars canon in the 2019 Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying supplementary sourcebook Rise of the Separatists. The Ethics Committee was originally mentioned in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 2012 novel Darth Plagueis, written by James Luceno.
