"Whoever heard of a Feeorin Jedi? But Feln is a natural."
Krynda Draay[src]

Feln was a Feeorin Sage Master stationed on Taris around 3,964 BBY. He was also one of five members of the First WatchCircle of the Jedi Covenant, a secret organization within the Jedi Order devoted to preventing the return of the Sith following the Great Sith War.

After witnessing a prophecy which he and the rest of the First Watchcircle believed foretold the return of the Sith, Feln committed the murder of his own Padawan, Oojoh. However, Jedi Padawan and witness to the massacre, Zayne Carrick, escaped, leading Feln and the rest of the First WatchCircle in pursuit.

Feln eventually caught up with Zayne on his homeworld of Odryn where he used his influence as leader and Exalted of his people, the Feeorin, to capture Zayne. However, after accidentally setting a village in jeopardy, Feln died at the hands of his own people in 3,963 BBY.

Biography

Early years and Jedi training

Before becoming a Jedi, Feln was the Elder of his tribe. He defeated all enemy tribes thanks to his Force-sensitivity, which his fellow warriors believed was magic. He was found and taken by Jedi Master Krynda Draay, and then joined with three other students at the Draay Estate on Coruscant.

For several years, he honed his abilities with the Force along with his prowess as a pilot. After passing all of Krynda's trials he was admitted into the Jedi Order as a Jedi Knight and would go on to become a Jedi Consular along with the three other trainees with him.

Eventually, Feln returned to his homeworld and allowed the Jedi Covenant to use the Sanctum of the Exalted, the holiest place for the Feeorin, as a storehouse of Sith artifacts. Other Feeorin, such as Borjak, believed allowing outsiders in the Sanctum was a violation of the Rime Feeorin - the ancient code of Feln's people. However, they followed Feln's orders as he was still the Exalted.

Assignment on Taris

Feln, with the other members of the Jedi Covenant, chases after fugitive Zayne Carrick.

Once a master, Feln was assigned to the Jedi Tower on Taris with the other members of the First WatchCircle to secretly recover the Muur Talisman. Because Feln and his partners were keeping their real mission a secret, the Jedi High Council felt that the masters, who were assigned to defend Taris, would be capable of training Padawans. The masters accepted reluctantly, since they needed to appease the Council in some manner. On Taris, Feln was the leader of the search for Zovius Mendu, who was smuggled off Taris by Marn "Gryph" Hierogryph in a crate of dried dreeka fish.

Near the end of his role as mentor to his student Oojoh, the masters arranged for their Padawans to have a survival test on the Taris system's Rogue Moon. It was a place where the Force flowed freely and where the Masters could be alone at times when they needed to meditate on Covenant related issues. They envisioned the destruction of the Jedi Order and the rule of the Sith. Fearing this possibility, the five Masters pointed out that the Sith in their visions wore similar suits as their Padawans were wearing at the same moment. When Raana Tey demanded the Padawans be executed, Feln quickly agreed to aid in the task for the protection of the galaxy.

After a final celebration with the Padawans and their families, the Covenant members took their students to the Council chambers and executed them; though Lucien Draay's own Padawan escaped. Blaming Carrick, the Taris masters quickly began to hunt the so-called fugitive.

Searching for Zayne

He joined fellow Masters Q'Anilia, Lucien, and Raana in their pursuit of Zayne Carrick and Marn Hierogryph; their search leading them into battle with rakghouls in Taris's Undercity. The masters were later present at the attempted arrest of Zayne and Gryph at Junk Junction, where the two managed to again escape offworld. The bounty hunter, Valius Ying, eventually captured Zayne and took him into custody so that Feln and his partners would finally be able to set things right. Lucien told Zayne the truth in front of the hunter, whom he murdered, and Zayne would have been next if not for a surprise rescue from Jarael and the crew of the Last Resort.

Weeks later, after a series of riots breaking out due to the escape of Zayne, Feln and the other four members of Covenant received a message from Carrick, who gave them an ultimatum: confess and clear his name, or die at his hand. With Taris lost, the Jedi High Council recalled the masters to Coruscant for their failures.

The High Council's decision

Upon returning to Coruscant, Feln and the other masters attempted to meet with Krynda Draay. However, they were denied entrance by the household droid. The Circle met with the Jedi Council and pleaded their point that they needed to be leading the search for the renegade Padawan. Master Vrook Lamar denied them and ordered that they be reassigned to separate postings.

Despite the fact that the former Taris Masters had been sent elsewhere on separate assignments to aid the war effort, they managed to keep in contact with each other. Feln later attended a memorial for Raana Tey but it was interrupted by a vision of the Muur Talisman. He offered to head for Taris to kill Zayne and destroy the ancient artifact, but Lucien had someone else in mind who was already there.

Death on Odryn

"What are you doing, Borjak? I'm the Exalted! I'm the Eldest!"
"Not for long."
―Feln and Borjak[src]

Feln returned to his homeworld of Odryn at the time in which Zayne Carrick and Gryph sought to leave the planet and expose the Covenant to the Jedi Council.[1] After Zayne and Gryph were captured, Feln reported to Lucien Draay that Zayne had gotten in to the Sanctum using Celeste's key and were taking recordings of the Covenant's activities. They incorrectly concluded that Zayne had killed their agent, Celeste Morne, and was planning to blackmail the Covenant. Lucien told Feln to destroy the Sanctum if worst came to worst. However, Haazen, co-founder of the Covenant, interrupted their conversation and ordered that Feln not destroy the Sanctum under any circumstances. While Draay and Haazen debated on this matter, Feln and Borjak went off to finish Zayne.

Feln disposed of Zayne's lightsaber and then struck him, returning the favor for Raana Tey's death. As Feln was about to kill Zayne with his own saber, Borjak stopped him; reminding Feln that no weapon could be used on the sacred ground within the Sanctum. Zayne seized the opportunity to attack Feln while he was distracted and escape. He did not get far, however, and Feln caught him before he could leave the village. When Borjak informed him that Zayne's friends were returning, believing that they were back to loot the Sanctum, Feln triggered the charges to destroy it. However, the charges not only destroyed the Sanctum, but the entire hill beneath it and tore apart the village as well. Shocked and insane with horror, Feln blamed Zayne for causing the destruction of the village and reached for his lightsaber. But all he found was a stick, for Gryph had switched his lightsaber with a stick earlier, just as he had foreseen in the Rogue Moon prophecy.

Borjak by now had been pushed beyond the edge of endurance by Feln's arrogance and carelessness. With Feln standing horrified, he took the initiative and stabbed Feln in the back with a knife. Declaring that Feln was no longer their leader and that they were changing the rules, the furious villagers descended on the fallen Jedi Master and finished him off.

Personality and traits

"I saw my death! How can I let pass a warning from the Force?"
―Feln argues for action against their visions.[src]

Like others of his species, Feln was very foreboding and brusque. He was quick to go for the most direct answer to a problem. Due to his early life on Odryn, he retained many of the Feeorin's proverbs and sayings, though he rarely allowed this to interfere with his mission.

Behind the scenes

Feln was created by John Jackson Miller for the first story arc of the Knights of the Old Republic comics.

Miller has said that Feln's name originated from the initials of his nieces and nephews. Going back two letters from Feln gives the first initials of Daniel, Christopher, Joey, and Laurie.[2]
