- "What'd you think flame beetles taste like?"
"What?"
"You know, are they spicy? Because of the, uh… fire."
"I don't think it works like that." - ―Two stormtroopers discuss flame beetles
Flame beetles were a species of beetle that lived on the planet Kashyyyk. The creatures consumed local plants and synthesized their remains into a highly flammable derivative, giving them their signature bioluminescent abdomen. They were then able to make these chemicals spontaneously combust when in proximity to an enemy or upon death.[1]
In 14 BBY,[2] during Cal Kestis' mission to Kashyyyk, he encountered many flame beetles that assaulted him. He killed many to continue his mission.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Flame beetles first appeared in the current Star Wars canon in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.[1] The species originates in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in the 1984 comic Star Wars (1977) 91 written by Mary Jo Duffy and pencilled by Tony Salmons.[3]
