Stewjon

Stewjon was a terrestrial planet located in the Stewjon system. It had an atmosphere that allowed Humans to breathe oxygen comfortably. Stewjon was the homeworld of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and his family, though he was taken from the planet at a young age for training to become a Jedi.

Located in the Stewjon system,^[1] Stewjon was a terrestrial planet with an atmosphere that consisted of a breathable oxygen mix that could support Human life. The world had a climate that supported the growth of grass.^[2]

History[]

In the year 57 BBY,^[4] the Human male Obi-Wan Kenobi was born on Stewjon to his mother and father. Soon afterward, he was discovered by the Jedi Order to be Force-sensitive and was taken from his homeworld to the Jedi Temple on the galactic capital planet of Coruscant, where he began his training to become a Jedi.

By the time he was around 13-years-old^[5] and a Padawan, Kenobi did not remember much of living with his family on Stewjon. He could recall some memories such as eating fruit with his brother, Owen. They did so in a grassy area on the world. Nonetheless, the Jedi Order allowed Kenobi to occasionally visit his family on Stewjon after his initial training.^[2]^[6]

Speculation about Obi-Wan Kenobi's homeworld first appeared in chapter 26 of the 1998 novel I, Jedi, when Corran Horn asks Luke Skywalker, "Wasn't [Tatooine] Obi-Wan Kenobi's homeworld?" Luke doesn't address the question.

The world was first seen, albeit unnamed, in a flashback in Jedi Apprentice: The Hidden Past, the third book of the young-readers series Jedi Apprentice, published on August 1, 1999 and written by Jude Watson.

June 21, 2010^[8] saw the publication of the reference book Star Wars: The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia, which listed Coruscant as Kenobi's homeworld. Other Jedi were listed with the planet of their birth, such as Mace Windu of Haruun Kal, so at that point it was established that Kenobi was born there^[9] even though residential areas on Coruscant were high above the surface with unnatural metallic floors that lacked grass for Kenobi to come into contact with.^[10]

This situation changed at the Celebration V convention during "The Main Event," a scripted interview between Star Wars creator George Lucas and talk-show host Jon Stewart that took place on August 14, 2010.^[11] During the panel, Stewart asked Lucas for the name of Kenobi's homeworld, to which Lucas replied, "Stewjon," a tuckerization of Stewart's name.^[7]

Official Star Wars Twitter feeds reported this shortly thereafter,^[6] which led to some Star Wars staff, including author Daniel Wallace and Holocron continuity database keeper Leland Chee, confirming on their respective Twitter feeds that the planet Stewjon would appear in future editions of The Essential Atlas and the Holocron.^[12]^[13] According to Wallace, Chee, Jason Fry, and he were discussing the correct spelling and galactic map placement of the planet less than an hour after Lucas made the joke.^[14] The planet's name fell under the category of G-canon, which was anything Lucas directly provided to Lucasfilm Ltd.—the highest form of continuity in the Star Wars universe at the time. Thus, Kenobi's recently established birth on Coruscant, made official by a lesser source, was overridden. This incident is similar to Lucas naming Conan Antonio Motti after comedian Conan O'Brien, which was also confirmed as canon.^[15]

On September 14, 2010, a month after being named, Stewjon was listed as Kenobi's homeworld on his "Clone Card," an online supplement to Season Three of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, marking its first appearance in an official source.^[3]^[16] On March 16, 2011, Stewjon was given a system named after itself in the Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion on StarWars.com.^[1]^[17] Despite these references and another from a book entitled Star Wars: Mysteries of the Jedi,^[18] the Star Wars Character Encyclopedia, published on June 20, 2011,^[19] provided Coruscant as Kenobi's homeworld as in the original The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia.^[20]
