Firegems (also known as fire-gems)[1] were extremely radiant gemstones that had a high price on the black market. Thus, they were an excellent opportunity for profit for many smugglers.
Buyers of firegems included the Corellian smugglers Dubrak Qennto, Jorj Car'das, and Maris Ferasi, who owned the smuggling ship Bargain Hunter. While smuggling firegems on the fringes of the Outer Rim, they were chased by Progga the Hutt's ship. However, a frontier picket force of the Chiss Ascendancy's Expansionary Fleet under Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo intercepted them and destroyed Progga's ship, before impounding the Hunter and detaining its crew.[2]
Dangers[]
The molecular structure of the firegem vibrated constantly, creating a heat source that made the gems feel warm to the touch. Criminal and terrorist organizations discovered that the vibration of the firegem had an adverse reaction when placed near a hyperdrive reactor, causing the reactor to explode when the ship entered hyperspace. For this reason, they were outlawed by the Old Republic as well as the New Order.
