The result of the debate was Support proposal to have the French inter-language links on Wookieepedia link to Wookiepédia: l'encyclopédie Star Wars libre instead of linking to the Wikia-based French Star Wars wiki. Toprawa and Ralltiir 03:05, January 16, 2011 (UTC)
Good day, everyone.
I know it is a busy time of the year, but I still hope everyone had a wonderful last couple of weeks. With the fantastic work that Trazeris has done on his French wiki, I want to once again open the floor to discussion and voting about what to do with our inter-language links. While I'm hesitant to abandon the Wikia-based wiki because we are a Wikia-based wiki, Wookiepédia is far superior in quality. In previous discussions on this issue (seen here), I brought up issues I had with both wikis. The primary issues I had with Wookiepédia centered around copyright (file attribution and converting to CC-by-SA). These issues have been completely solved, as indicated in the Senate Hall discussion. I'm highly pleased with the work Trazeris has done, and I think it is in the best interests of Wookieepedia to change our inter-language links based solely upon the issue of quality. As a note, we have done this with the German and Polish wikis in the past as well.
Here are some assessments of Wookiepédia:
- 1200 articles with numerous lengthy articles
- Superior article quality to the Wikia-based wiki
- French-based interface for French-speaking users
- Better aesthetics
- A clean slate that does not have the plagiarism, pornography, or other issues of the Wikia-based wiki
- Proper image attribution
- CC-by-SA compatibility
Now, I understand that in the conversion process not all articles on the French wiki will be linked and we will have broken links on our end. Should this proposal pass, I will speak to Grunny, Culator, or someone with bot experience to help me in changing the links over in the most efficient way. I believe HotCat is designed to handle things like this, too. If this discussion is absolutely warranted, we would then vote on this portion of the issue separately below and not as part of the initial proposal. — Fiolli; 21:48, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
Proposal summary[]
Here's the official language of the proposal for those who kind of skimmed all that other stuff:
Please vote to support or reject the proposal to have the French inter-language links on Wookieepedia link to "Wookiepédia: l'encyclopédie Star Wars libre" instead of linking to the Wikia-based French Star Wars wiki.
Thank you everyone. Please keep all discussion and comments to the discourse area at the bottom of the page and refrain from wiki-lawyering in the voting area. — Fiolli; 21:48, December 30, 2010 (UTC)

- Naturally I support this change, but knowing Wikia… 1358 (Talk) 22:04, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe if Wikia didn't actively strive to function as completely contrary to the best interests of its editors as possible, the superior French version would still be Wikia-hosted. Toprawa and Ralltiir 22:19, December 30, 2010 (UTC)

- Sad as it is, Wikia will probably refuse to change them. 1358 (Talk) 21:50, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- It has been done before, and I believe we have direct control over that, if necessary. — Fiolli; 21:56, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it has been done before, but that has been due to lack of a Wikia version of the wiki. And no, we don't have control over our interwiki and interlanguage wikis. Here is a log of a discussion between me and Sannse, a Wikia staff member, in #wikia:

[23:53] <Xd1358> sannse, does wikia change interwiki links to lead to a non-wikia wiki? [23:54] <sannse> interwiki or interlanguage? [23:55] <Xd1358> interlanguage [23:55] <Xd1358> those that pop up in the monobook sidebar, and somewhere in oasis... o.o [23:55] <sannse> we have done on occasion, if there isn't a wikia version to link to

- I'm interested to hear what our admins say about this because we've been through this with the DE and PL wikis (which both have and had wikia equivalents).— Fiolli; 22:10, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- I'm the admin of Wookiepédia. Maybe you could only ask Wikia for an additional interwiki link instead of a change, fr2: or something... You need access to the database to change an interwiki. Trazeris 22:06, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- I'd also like to point out that Jedipedia (de) and Biblioteka Ossus (pl) have both changed their links, as well. — Fiolli; 22:10, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- The pros of being non-Wikia wikis—direct control over everything. Anywho, here's about the duplicate links: (Concurrent stuff removed)
[00:10] <Xd1358> sannse - what about having two different interlanguage links, like [[fr: and [[fr2: , would that be possible? [00:12] <sannse> Xd1358: no, we've tried that before, but novel interwiki codes break too easily [00:13] <Xd1358> so no chance of having them changed? :/ [00:13] <sannse> we'd definitely rather link to a local version, obviously [00:13] <Xd1358> obviously [00:13] <Xd1358> I need to have a definitive answer. :P [00:14] <sannse> then, no, sorry

- Such a shame, I will try to connect to IRC but not sure I'm not on my computer... Also, I might be able to hack common.js or even common.css to change the interwikis links as soon as they are displayed on Wookieepedia. But I'm sure Wikia would freak out so it's up to you. Trazeris 22:25, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Both channels can be accessed through Freenode's gateway. And yes, Wikia would definitely freak out. :P 1358 (Talk) 22:26, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- I talked with sannse, not much to do. The only solution would be to make a template which would add a "This article in French" in External links sections... something like {{fr|Un article}} You could do the same for the Finnish wiki. Trazeris 23:16, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- That may be at this point in time. We should still nevertheless come to some point of consensus on what to do and let our administrators discuss this with wikia. That is proper etiquette. — Fiolli; 23:20, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, I was just trying to find a workaround. Trazeris 23:53, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
