So I've been planning to read to backlog of Star Wars comics out there since 2013, from the start of In the Shadow of Yavin onwards really, but I'm confused by some things. Because ItSoY was just labeled Star Wars for a while, and then Marvel released a line just called Star Wars and the old series may or may not be canon I really don't know where to start. Would someone kindly help me string which stories go in what order? I know the new Darth Vader line is NOT related to the Vader Quadrilogy put out in the last few years, but it also comes after something else. Can I get a definite list here? Thank you all ahead of time.

  • In brief, Brian Wood's Star Wars series, which came out in 2013 and started with the Star Wars: In the Shadow of Yavin arc, is a series that took place immediately after Episode IV. It is "Legends" continuity, which means it is NOT part of the new canon of Star Wars. Effective January 1st, 2015, the Star Wars licence left Dark Horse Comics and went to Marvel, and Marvel launched a series also called Star Wars, by Jason Aaron. This is also set within the first few days/weeks after Episode IV. But this new Marvel series is independent of all other previous Expanded Universe material, including the Brian Wood 2013 series and even Marvel's old 1977 series. In theory, Jason Aaron's Star Wars will be consistent with the new movies, whereas Wood's Star Wars and everything else is to be completely ignored by the new movies. As for the new Darth Vader by Kieron Gillen, it is also independent of the various Haden Blackman Darth Vader miniseries from a few years back. It is part of the new canon and happens concurrently with Jason Aaron's Star Wars series. Indeed, the two will have a crossover called Star Wars: Vader Down in November-December (and I believe January). You should also be aware of the various miniseries being published by Marvel in the new canon alongside the two ongoings: Star Wars: Princess Leia, Star Wars: Lando, and Star Wars: Chewbacca (Marvel). To conclude, the 2015 "Star Wars" and "Darth Vader" series are both part of the new canon, are being currently published (issue 9 of each just came out), and are quite good. Previous comics, including the 2013 "Star Wars", are Legends continuity and are not taken into account for the current ongoings. Many/most Legends comics are great, though I think there was a quality reduction at around 2013 (I did not care for the Brian Wood series at all). I sincerely hope that helps!     • EDIT: I forgot! There's also an ongoing series called Star Wars: Kanan: The Last Padawan, which is also in the new canon and ties into the Star Wars Rebels cartoon. I'm not reading it, as I'm not watching the show, but I'm told it's quite good. But yea, for general reading advice: my opinion is to start with the new stuff (especially Star Wars and Darth Vader), and then try to consume any older you think might be interesting, acknowledging that literally every comic published before 2015, with exactly one exception, fit into their own separate canon. FYI, Marvel is reprinting a lot of those Legends comics in their Epic Collection line, and a lot of them are really good.
