Forums > Senate Hall > SH:Anon edit warning

There's been a few instances over the years where an anon has made potentially good-faith edits that are borderline acceptable. Perhaps their edit breaches NPOV, uses OOU or present/future tense, incorporates some speculation or fanon that they believe is correct. This can generate frustration when requests for sources are made or edits are reverted, because they are editing as an anon we cannot guide or clarify the issue and may resort to bans when that frustration manifests as a revert war or harsh language in the edit summary, potentially creating bad blood and pushing those people away.

There is currently a warning that is shown to anon users when they edit, which I feel is perhaps not as welcoming to those users as it could be—ideally, we'd like them to return and continue editing with a username. I drafted some potential ideas, but wanted to bring it to the community to discuss if a) we SHOULD update this message and b) what should the updated wording look like.

Current: Warning: You are not logged in. Your IP address will be publicly visible if you make any edits. If you [$1 log in] or [$2 create an account], your edits will be attributed to your username, along with other benefits.

Option 1: Welcome! You haven't logged in, which means we won't be able to communicate with you and your IP address will be publicly available if you make any edits. If you [$1 log in] or [$2 create an account], your edits will be attributed to your username and we'll be able to work with you!

Option 2: Warning: You are not logged in: your IP address will be publicly visible if you make any edits and we won't be able to communicate with you if there are any issues. If you [$1 log in] or [$2 create an account], your edits will be attributed to your username and we'll be able to raise issues with you, along with other benefits.

As you can see, I believe it is important to maintain the mention that their IP will be publicly visible as well as noting the ability for us to interact with these users if they create an account (which they don't need to if they so choose). This small change of language may help some users to stick with us.

What do you all think? Manoof (he/him/his) (talk) 13:22, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

  • I like the first option, though I say we specify "create a free account." People like to know they aren't going to be charged or asked to donate or anything when creating an account. MasterFredCommerce Guild.svg(talk) 20:48, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

  • I also like Option 1, also per Fred. Is there any reason we can't also include the other benefits part to that option as well? - JMAS Jolly Trooper.png Hey, it's me! 21:34, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
  • Yeah number one for sure. Supreme Emperor Holocomm 00:20, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
  • I agree with everyone else, though I also agree with Fred, the fact that the account is free needs to also be stated Editoronthewiki (talk) 01:19, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
