Forums > Senate Hall archive > SH:Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir applies to Legends too

Recently, our old friend Jedi Kasra brought an interesting matter to my attention, demonstrating to me the evidence that the Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir comic-book series applies to both Canon and Legends.

Some quick background for the uninitiated: Son of Dathomir was originally published by Dark Horse, the Star Wars Expanded Universe comic license holder, from May–August 2014, shortly after the April 25, 2014 announcement from Lucasfilm that the Expanded Universe was being reorganized under the new non-canon Legends banner. This was one of the final Star Wars comic series published by Dark Horse before the Star Wars license shifted to Marvel in 2015. Because Son of Dathomir was created in conjunction with George Lucas based on unfinished scripts for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the comic series is considered part of the new Star Wars canon, and it has since been republished by Marvel.

And that's how we've been handling Son of Dathomir up to now. But it seems we've been looking at this a bit myopically. We were told this series was Canon but apparently never stopped to consider that it might also apply to Legends, which we can now see that it does. I present to you the evidence:

  1. Legends banner. The Son of Dathomir Spanish-language comic issues and trade paperback were published with the Legends banner. Behold the following images: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  2. Matt Martin. Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm Story Group has expressly endorsed Son of Dathomir applying to Legends via Twitter. See Tweets 1 and 2. To quote him, he says, Yes, it’s based on original scripts so I would say it fits into the TCW continuity which exists in the new canon. Since the show itself also existed in Lengends, and its Dark Horse, IDK why it wouldn’t also be Legends.

So we have confirmation here both publisher and Lucasfilm. It's pretty clear that Matt Martin doesn't really care much either way, since Lucasfilm and the Story Group are no longer concerned with Legends, but it's nonetheless important for Wookieepedia's purposes to ensure that the Legends continuity is documented completely and accurately. Therefore, I encourage anyone interested to begin working on filling this stuff in and creating any new articles that need to be. I wanted to lay all of this out in a Senate Hall thread so the community can have a record of exactly why we're doing this, since there is bound to be some curiosity. Feel free to ask any questions below. Thanks. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 21:39, August 26, 2019 (UTC)

Son of Dathomir reveals that Talzin is the mother of Maul. However, in Legends, this was not the case.--Editoronthewiki (talk) 23:28, August 26, 2019 (UTC)

  • Was there a question in there? Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 23:31, August 26, 2019 (UTC)
    • How should the wiki try to explain that issue? The Kycina article even mentions Talzin. I feel like this is the only big discrepancy that would prevent Son of Dathomir from being both canon and Legends.--Editoronthewiki (talk) 23:33, August 26, 2019 (UTC)
      • First of all, Lucasfilm and the publisher have both explicitly endorsed its Legends status. Nothing short of a subsequent clarification from Lucasfilm decertifying that status changes this situation. How you or anyone "feels" about this is irrelevant. As far as continuity discrepancies, the Canon policy tells us how to handle these things. I would imagine this particular case is no different than what happened to Boba Fett's backstory with regard to Attack of the Clones. The Son of Dathomir story details came directly from George Lucas' authority, so they outrank anything that came before. So the details about Kycina would need to be treated as either non-canon or some kind of in-universe apocrypha. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 23:41, August 26, 2019 (UTC)
