"And for the final task, you must be brave to steal the eggs from a frosch's cave."
―Logray explaining the fungus cure[1]

Frosch were a species of lizard on the Forest Moon of Endor. In 3 ABY, a family of Ewoks on Endor needed to acquire frosch eggs for a potion to save their father, Deej Warrick, from rokna tree fungus. One of Warrick's sons, Weechee, went into the frosch grotto to try and get the eggs; he was successful doing so but had to quickly escape the cave as several frosch chased after him. He barely escaped, falling down a waterfall to avoid the frosch and surviving thanks to his brothers' help.

Biology and appearance[]

"Such greedy lizards."

The frosch were a species of six-legged, orange,[1] amphibious[2] lizard who lived in caves on the Forest Moon of Endor. They had three-toed feet at the end of each limb, red tongues, yellow eyes, and a long tail,[1] and they were known for their sharp,[2] jagged teeth[3] that could devour anything.[4] The skin on their chin and around their eyes was gray as opposed to the orange of the rest of their bodies. Frosch laid eggs that were small and white in color.[1]

Behavior[]

"I am on an important mission. And all you can think about is your stomachs."
―Willy scolds the frosch[1]

Frosch were quick to attack intruders who went after their eggs and were willing to try and eat Ewoks[1] as they were carnivores. Frosch were known for having short tempers.[2]

History[]

"Hmm! You should be ashamed of yourself. The way you frosch are carrying on, you'd think Ewoks are good to eat."
―Willy admonishes the frosch[1]

Many frosch on Endor lived in the frosch grotto, a cave whose opening was a large waterfall.[1] The grotto was within the swamps and had a deep pond.[4] In 3 ABY,[5] the Ewok Deej Warrick was gravely injured by a rokna tree's fungus. His family brought him to their village's medicine man, Logray, who prescribed a potion requiring frosch eggs to save his life[1] as frosch eggs were a healing-potion ingredient.[2] He warned that the frosch eggs would require the most bravery of the ingredients needed to be gathered;[1] everyone was scared of the frosch.[4] Warrick's sonsWeechee, Willy, and Wicket Warrick—split up to get the different ingredients. Weechee trekked to the frosch grotto on the directions of Logray, entering alone. He tiptoed inside, trying to avoid the frosch, but in the attempt, he got many frosch eggs stuck to his clothing, attracting three growling frosch' attention. Weechee pocketed a few of the eggs and backed out of the cave near the top of the waterfall, where a fourth frosch arrived, cornering him. He tried to run away but was unable to gain traction with the slippery ground,[1] eventually saying a prayer[4] and jumping into the waterfall.[1]

The Ewok was able to survive the fall by hanging on to a branch protruding from the waterfall, but he became stuck there and began shouting for help as the frosch eyed him. It was then that the rest of the Ewoks arrived, extending a rope for him to hold on to in order to escape. Weechee successfully swung to a tree and landed back on the ground, but the frosch followed, cornering the Ewoks and their Gupin companion, Mring-Mring, up against the side of a stone formation. They were all forced to try and scale it, but Willy slipped down.[1]

The frosch—whose numbers had by then increased to over a dozen—approached him, snarling, but Willy stood up and began lecturing them on the importance of his mission and how greedy it was that all they could do was think about their stomachs. They stepped back slightly as he further told them that it was shameful to think Ewoks a good thing to eat; however, the frosch were unconvinced by Willy's words and crept closer to him, prompting the Ewok to race up the side of the formation. He joined the rest of the party at the top, realizing that they were trapped as the frosch encircled them. The frosch then also began climbing up the stone, so Mring-Mring quickly used his magical abilities to transform into a large winged creature and fly away while carrying the Ewoks.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The frosch first appeared in "To Save Deej," the fourth episode of the first season of the animated series Ewoks,[1] which first aired on September 28, 1985.[6] The 2001 first issue of The Official Star Wars Fact File is the lone source to capitalize them as "Frosch," so this article assumes it erred.[7] While the episode refers to the frosch as lizards,[1] the StarWars.com Databank entry for Weechee Warrick called them salamanders.[3] This article assumes that the Databank erred.

Wicket and the Dandelion Warriors: An Ewok Adventure, an adaptation of the episode written by Larry Weinberg[4] and published on November 12, 1985,[8] mentions that Weechee intentionally stuck his hand a rock to find the eggs and that when he found many of them stuck together, he separated a single egg to take. It also maintains that he went deeper into the frosch cave before jumping into the water.[4] As the episode depicts him finding the eggs accidentally and fleeing the cave soon after the frosch find him,[1] this article uses that version of the events.
