A gene was a component of genetic material. Arkanians were masters of genetic technology and bioengineering, which they used to breed sentient life. They created genetic offshoots of themselves that lived brief lives in servitude to pure-blooded "true Arkanian" masters.[2] Arkanians also created the Quermian species, a genetic offshoot of the Xexto named for Quermia, the planet they were settled on.[3]
