Gizz's Gang,[1] commonly referred to as Jabba's swoop gang[2] was a motley swoop gang of mercenaries, bounty hunters, and other scoundrels in the employ of the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure during the Galactic Civil War. By the year 3.5 ABY, the gang was led by Gizman.
Big Gizz was the leader of Jabba's gang on Tatooine. The Hutt was often later annoyed by the gang riding their speeders inside the corridors of his palace. Spiker was Gizz's right hand man, and they were the only members of the gang to survive the encounter with Jedi Luke Skywalker. After Jabba's death, Gizz and Spiker were reunited, as Gizz was left for dead by Jix, a "fellow biker"/Imperial spy, and Spiker was shot in the attempt to retrieve Han Solo's carbonized body from Boba Fett. Having stolen a ship from Jabba's palace following the Rebel operation on Tatooine, Gizz and Spiker were almost killed by a deadly security device Jabba had installed onboard the craft, which turned out to be his personal treasure ship. After they crash-landed the ship, and escaped with their lives, the bikers left to find civilization in the company of Onoh, who had been guarding the ship.
Behind the scenes[]
- "Most of them will turn out to be fodder for Luke and Dash, but two to note are Spiker, who wears so many spikes youmight mistake him for a porcupine, and Big Gizz, the leader, who's about 6'9", hairy and shaggy, with bones through his ears or nose (or both) and a face like Jaws form the bond film."
- ―John Wagner's description of the Gang for the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (comic series)
The swoop gang is featured in all media of the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project. It was inspired by the "conehead" swoop bikers designed by Industrial Light and Magic for the special edition of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In most media, they are faceless and nameless, but the comic series fleshes out their background, and some of the individual members.[3]
In the video game they feature the "conehead" appearance,[4] and a "conehead" also appears in the cover of the third issue of the comic series, drawn by Hugh Fleming.[5]
