The Gran Protectorate was a government established on the planet Malastare by Gran colonists c. 1000 BBY.
History[]
It was established after a series of conflicts between the Gran and the native Dugs; after the Galactic Republic sided in favor of the Gran, the Protectorate was established and resettled the Dugs to the western continent of their homeworld.[2]
The Gran Protectorate, while maintaining the Gran's strong social bonds, operated under a much looser set of moral codes than those that governed the Gran on their homeworld, Kinyen. Partially because of this, corruption was extremely high. The high corruption rate, as well as the brutality towards the Dugs, led some Gran on Kinyen to conclude that the Gran of Malastare were no longer real Gran.
The Protectorate soon became the most influential and powerful of all Gran settlements. In the time of the Galactic Republic, all of Malastare's senators (such as Pax Teem, Aks Moe, Ainlee Teem, Baskol Yeesrim, and Ask Aak) came from the Protectorate. During the Clone Wars, the Protectorate appeared to have at least ceded self-rule to a predominantly Dug Malastarian council under Doge Nakha Urus which ratified the Treaty of Malastare with the Republic following the Battle of Malastare and the apparent death of the Zillo Beast.[3]
The Protectorate was presumably weakened, or possibly even abolished, under first the Galactic Empire (where the planet was ruled by Humans)[4] and the New Republic (where Dugs appeared to have equal rights). In any event, the Protectorate was certainly destroyed when Malastare was conquered by the Yuuzhan Vong during the Yuuzhan Vong War.
