"You can't pull a ship out of hyperspace because you never know exactly where it is. A tractor beam can't get a lock."
"That's 'cause this isn't a tractor beam. It's a gravity well."
Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren[1]

A gravity well was the pull of gravity that a large body in space—such as a planet—exerted.[2] Gravity wells could also be created artificially: thanks to a gravity well projector,[3] it was possible to generate an "interdiction field" capable of disabling a starship's hyperspace maneuvers.[4]

History[]

The Maw Solo

The Maw, residing in the Maw Cluster near Kessel, exerting its gravity well

Millennia before the fall of the Galactic Republic, the technologically advanced Predori constructed starships able to withstand the crushing force of a gravity well. One such vessel, a prison ship christened Ashmead's Lock, stayed hidden within a gravity well until said well collapsed on itself.[5]

The Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han Solo through the Kessel Run after escaping Kessel, was pursued by a summa-verminoth and nearly pulled into a gravity well of the black hole known as The Maw located in the Maw Cluster, but escaped with the help of coaxium.[6]

Due to bad hyperspace calculations, the Executor-class Star Dreadnought Arbitrator was sucked into a gravity well while attempting to evade capture by the New Republic.[5]

Rey surmised that, during the Battle of Jakku, the Imperial captains locked on to the nearby New Republic vessels with their warships' tractor beams and pulled them down into Jakku's gravity well, causing them to crash without visible battle damage.[2]
