- "You will, therefore, be taken to the Dune Sea and cast into the Pit of Carkoon, the nesting place of the all-powerful sarlacc."
- ―C-3PO, translating Jabba the Hutt
The Great Pit of Carkoon, also known as the Sarlacc Pit, was a large sand basin located within the Dune Sea, on the desert planet of Tatooine.[4] The pit was home to the "almighty Sarlacc," who was an unusually non-carnivorous sarlacc and did not appreciate sentients being force-fed to it.[5] Like other sarlaccs, its digestion could take thousands of years. Due to its proximity to Jabba the Hutt's palace, the crime lord used the pit and its sarlacc for torturous executions. The pit was the location of the rescue of Han Solo, which took place shortly before the Battle of Endor. Jabba was killed next to the Great Pit of Carkoon in the Khetanna by Leia Organa.[3] The pit, alongside the sarlacc inhabiting it, was later destroyed when Fennec Shand dropped one of Slave I's Seismic charges into it.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
The sound of the sarlacc was created from sounds of alligator hisses, as well as the sounds of some of the Return of the Jedi crew's stomachs after eating pizza.[7]
