"The first surprise the belt had in store, however, was the discovery of strange patterns of ancient runes we found etched into the sides of several asteroids while performing a routine topographical scan of grid sector 867-3A4."
―Korren Starchaser's datafiles[2]

Grid sector 867-3A4 was a part of the Serianan Belt in Wild Space's Serianan system. It contained several asteroids with ancient runes carved on their surfaces, including one that also housed the artificial cavern known as the Gulch. At some point during the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic scout vessel Jedi Dreamer explored the area.

Description[]

Grid sector 867-3A4 was an area of the Serianan Belt, a field of asteroids situated in[2] Wild Space's[1] Serianan system. It contained several of the belt's larger asteroids, and the orbiting body with the largest size in the sector was an asteroid that hosted the artificial cavern known as the Gulch.[2]

History[]

"While the whole field of asteroids deserves to be studied in detail, several of the larger specimens, particularly in grid sector 867-3A4, have gained the most attention."
―Korren Starchaser's datafiles[2]
Serianan Belt

The scout starship Jedi Dreamer explored grid sector 867-3A4.

At some point during the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic Scout Service starship Jedi Dreamer under the command of Captain Korren Starchaser undertook an expedition to the Serianan system. Eventually, while performing a routine topographical scan of grid sector 867-3A4, the crew of the scout vessel discovered the ancient runes that were carved on several of the Serianan Belt's asteroids. In addition, the scouts subsequently found the Gulch, which they explored using Vagabond deep space powersuits, and recovered from it a set of five alien statues.[2]

Starchaser, wishing to protect the Serianan system from an ill-timed discovery by "unsavory" interests, ultimately cut the expedition short. In a datafile report he made on the expedition, the scout captain noted that several of grid sector 867-3A4's asteroids were particularly worthy of further studies and, in a diagram attached to the document, noted the most prominent runes discovered in the area as well as their relative locations.[2]

Later, the New Republic Scout Service hired a group of individuals to carry out a follow-up investigation of the Serianan Belt, primarily focusing on studying the mineral composition of the Gulch.[2]

Locations[]

"The Gulch is the nickname we gave to an immense cavern inside the largest, most heavily carved asteroid in sector 867-3A4."
―Korren Starchaser's datafiles[2]

Multiple asteroids of grid sector 867-3A4 featured patterns of ancient runes carved on their surfaces, with the asteroid housing the Gulch having the highest concentration of such markings.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Grid sector 867-3A4 was introduced in the "Scouts' Dispatch" feature of the eighth issue of West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine, published in November 1995. The feature was written by Peter Woodworth, illustrated by David Deitrick, and included a Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game adventure seed related to the Gulch that this article assumes plays out as described.[2]
