A guard shoto,[1] also called a lightsaber tonfa[2] had a regular lightsaber hilt set at a 90-degree angle to the blade,[1] which allowed the wielder to quickly change from attacking to defense, and with one movement; block an attack and counter attack. Though it was a hard weapon to master, they were very effective especially when it was used in conjunction with the Shien form of lightsaber combat, which had techniques for backhanded grips and tonfa style weapons to allow counterstrikes unexpectedly.[2]
