Guattako the Grim was a male warlord on the planet Oosalon during the reign of the Galactic Republic. He was the leader of a Hutt funded army of kidnapped children who he had corrupted into terrorists, and had them kidnap 26 more children for him during the chancellorship of Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum in 34 BBY.

His followers captured the Jedi Master Mace Windu after the Jedi traveled alone to Oosalon and brought him to Guattako's lair in the tunnels beneath the planet's surface. There, Windu revealed he had allowed himself to be captured in order to lead his allies to Guattako, and the Jedi and the warlord fought after Windu reconstructed his lightsaber. Guattako was ultimately killed by one of his own child soldiers, who simply wanted to go home.

Biography

Outer Rim warlord

Guattako the Grim was a warlord based on the Outer Rim Territories planet Oosalon, where he commanded an army made up of kidnapped children during the reign of the Galactic Republic. Providing food, he would corrupt the children he kidnapped, such as the impoverished Quia, with his hatred and convince them to work as "freedom fighters," although in reality they were terrorists. Working out of the thousands of meters of caves beneath the planet's surface, the warlord hoped to start a revolution that would bring freedom to the quadrant. The operation was funded with money from the Hutts, but in return, Guattako's forces had to sow chaos in the right places.

In 34 BBY, Guattako's forces kidnapped twenty-six frightened children after slaughtering their teachers. His spies then reported that the Jedi Master Mace Windu had arrived alone at an outpost on Oosalon, and Guattako had Quia and the Kyuzo Kyossk capture Windu and destroy his lightsaber. The pair then delivered the captive Windu and his broken weapon to the waiting Guattako in the tunnels below, believing that Windu's fellow Jedi would never locate him beneath all the rock.

Guattako praised Kyossk for the capture and then welcomed Windu to his base of operations, dismissing the Jedi's various accusations and criticisms and explaining that he planned to execute Windu on a live broadcast. Taunting the Jedi's helplessness, he revealed the 26 caged children his men had kidnapped, but Windu merely offered the warlord one last chance to surrender. Realising that the Jedi had allowed himself to be captured so that he could lead his colleagues to Guattako's location with the Force, the warlord prepared to strike the Jedi down. However, Windu revealed that he could also use the Force to reconstruct his lightsaber, and summoned the now fully functional weapon from across the room, despite the efforts of Quia and Kyossk. Realising it was Windu that was making the weapon move, Guattako ordered his other followers to open fire on the Jedi before he could arm himself, but they were too slow.

Guattako fought Mace Windu after realizing the Jedi had allowed himself to be captured.

Windu deflected blaster bolts back at Guattako's men and knocked down Quia with the Force before the warlord himself attacked with his electrified polearm. As they fought, Guattako managed to catch Windu on the chin with the butt of his weapon and knock the Jedi to the ground, but before he could follow up the strike, Guattako was killed by a blaster bolt to the chest. The shot had been fired by one of his own child soldiers, who then asked Windu if he would now be allowed to go home. Windu's Jedi allies arrived shortly after the warlord's death, rescuing the kidnapped children and arresting the rest of Guattako's followers. Those who had already fought for Guattako like Kyossk and Quia for the role they had played despite the latter's young age.

Personality and traits

Guattako was a ruthless warlord who didn't see any problem in sending children to fight to death for a cause whose motives he considered pure in spite of being funded by the Hutts. According to Guattako himself, every great cause required sacrifices, even if that meant accepting Hutt resources for sowing chaos in the right places or recruiting raw soldiers. He considered himself a good enough leader as he was able to scare the esteemed Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, believing that his teachings would be greater for his abducted soldiers than Windu's.

Equipment

Guattako wore a set of gray armor, with a red cape and a skull-like helmet that included a mane of black hair. In combat, the warlord used an electrified polearm.

Behind the scenes

Guattako appeared in "The Weapon," a comic story written by Ethan Sacks and illustrated by Paolo Villanelli for publication in the comic book Age of Republic Special 1 on January 16, 2019. The 2019 sourcebook Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition erroneously states that Windu killed Guattako with his lightsaber.
