The Hassk triplets were a group of roaming thugs of near-feral subhumanoid beings of the Hassk species that frequented Takodana Castle.[1] Varmik was one of the Hassk triplets.[2] They itched for trouble, but could be kept in line by the larger beings frequenting the castle. All three carried blasters, one of them a battered VT-33d blaster pistol.[1] One of the taller two triplets had a smelly mange skin disease from sleeping in dung heaps.[3] In 34 BBY,[4] the the triplets were present at Takodana Castle when the smuggler Han Solo entered with the scavenger Rey, the former stormtrooper Finn and the Astromech droid BB-8. Not long after the four newcomers arrived, many of the patrons in the castle rushed outside to witness the First Order destroying the Hosnian system with their Starkiller Base superweapon. Kanata's castle was then attacked and destroyed by the forces of the First Order.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
The Hassk tiplets were first appeared in the scenes in Takodana Castle in the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[5] They remained unidentified in the film, but were identified in the film's junior novel adaptation[6] and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary,[1] which were both released on December 18, 2015,[7][8] the same day as the film.[9] Varmik was played by the actor Paul Warren[10] and another was played by Nathan Plant. Dee Tails was also originally intended to play one of the triplets, but was reassigned to play the Ubdurian Cratinus.[11] The Hassk were designed as a maquette by artist Ivan Manzella in December 2013, based upon a 1975 cantina illustration and an older Chewbacca concept by Ralph McQuarrie, and were originally known as "Maz's Castle Alien c069".[12]
