Plot summary[]
Somewhere in space, several Republic Venators and Separatist Dreadnaughts are locked in combat, and aboard one Venator, Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker lead a young Wookiee girl named Viiveenn to the hangar. Anakin wants to get in a starfighter and join the battle outside, but Obi-Wan believes that Anakin is doubting his piloting skills and reassures him that his ship was suffering technical difficulties during the skirmish against Tofen’s Raiders. Just then, a missile passes through the open bay doors and causes a massive explosion on the deck. With debris and wreckage everywhere in the hangar, Anakin has some fun with Obi-Wan and says that he should be the one to pilot a ship since he’s been separated from him and Viiveenn. Before the damage can spread any further, Obi-Wan takes Viiveenn into an ARC-170 starfighter, but she loses her doll that contains a Jedi artifact in the process. Viiveen pleads to get it back, but Obi-Wan doesn’t quite understand her, and as they leave the damaged Venator, Clone Force 99, also known as the Bad Batch, come along and enter the hangar. Wrecker discovers the Wookiee stuffy and immediately is interested, so he takes it for himself. Crosshair takes issue with this and they start to argue, but Hunter breaks them up and gets the squad aboard their ship, the Marauder.
They leave the scene and later arrive on the Outer Rim moon Hylanth, and as they depart and begin to travel through the jungle, Hunter and Tech explain their mission which is to deal with battle droids that have been modified. Crosshair is grumpy about the fact that the ‘regs’ could have completed this mission, and Wrecker points out his attitude and tries to cheer him up using his new stuffy. They soon come across rapid movement but can’t get a lock on it, and when coming upon a clearing, Tech informs the squad that there’s nothing on his scanners. Just then, a holographic transmission is played in front of them, and a figure named Dr. Krail introduces himself and calls the Bad Batch “an assembly line creation”, where they’re like battle droids but special, different, and better than the rest. Wrecker takes offense to them being compared to battle droids, but Krail believes that there’s no difference between them because of his bad batch of battle droids which he’s already deployed. Crosshair is suddenly snatched and pulled back into the jungle, and Tech informs Hunter that there is a bunker deeper in the jungle according to his readings. As they begin to move for it, they are intercepted by a large armored droid, but Wrecker tells his squad to keep moving as he can handle it. He cracks his knuckles and leaps at the droid while Hunter and Tech take off in search of the bunker.
Hours later, Hunter and Tech reach the bunker’s entrance, but as they prepare to head inside, they are attacked by a modified battle droid with four arms. Hunter instructs Tech to get inside the bunker while he deals with the droid, and meanwhile, Wrecker continues to fight with the large armored droid and becomes annoyed at its constant lines of “say goodbye”. Wrecker soon finds himself thrown against a tree, knocking his helmet off and sending his new stuffy over the edge of a canyon. Wrecker takes severe offense to this, and so he charges the droid and tosses it over the edge by swinging it around by its feet where it meets its destruction. Elsewhere inside of the bunker, Tech investigates the modified droids and calls for backup as he discovers a captured Crosshair and the power source. While Tech distracts Dr. Krail, Hunter arrives inside the bunker which allows Crosshair to use his toothpick that he’d had in his mouth to break free of his bonds. Being outnumbered and cornered, Krail activates his remaining droids, but Wrecker arrives in the nick of time and destroys the droids using the anger from losing his stuffy, before the rest of his squad can be overwhelmed. With the enemy defenseless, the Batch takes Krail prisoner and brings him back to the Marauder, and when Tech questions Wrecker about the whereabouts of his stuffy, Wrecker only says that the stuffy is long gone. However, after the Marauder leaves Hylanth, a female from Banas named Halorum is searching the canyon for junk and scrap that she can sell for credits when she comes across the stuffy.
Development[]
The original publisher's summary for the issue claimed it would cover Jedi Masters Yoda and Mace Windu on a mission to protect a Galactic Republic delegation, which was on a visit to an archaeological dig that could hold Jedi artifacts, from marauders.[2] However, this was later confirmed to be a mistake,[6] with issue 10 instead focusing on Clone Force 99, the "Bad Batch."[4] This was corrected in the Dark Horse Comics publisher's summary.[1] The plot original described later appeared in Hyperspace Stories 11.[7]
Continuity[]
The events of Hyperspace Stories 10 were first teased by Hyperspace Stories 9, where the psychometry-gifted Jedi Quinlan Vos saw moments[8] later featured in issue ten[9] upon touching Viiveenn's doll. As teased in issue 9,[8] Hyperspace Stories 10 sees Viiveenn lose her doll,[9] setting up other comics in the series; set later in the Star Wars timeline, such issues had seen the doll come into the orbit of various other characters.[10][11][12] However, Hyperspace Stories 5 had previously been suggested to have been a point by which Viiveenn had lost her doll as it was seen in the hands of a Gungan child.[13] However, in issue 10, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are depicted as they appear in Star Wars: The Clone Wars,[1] despite having their earlier younger Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones appearances in Hyperspace Stories 5.[13] Additionally, the name "Clone Force 99," used within issue 10,[9] comes in honor of the fallen Clone 99,[14] who died during the Battle of Kamino in 21 BBY.[15] As such, the events of issue 10 must come after the Battle of Kamino but before the end of the Clone Wars, placing it between 21 BBY and 19 BBY.[3] Therefore, Viiveenn also lost, but later reclaimed, her doll before Hyperspace Stories 5.
