The Imperial Navy, also known as the Imperial Starfleet, was the naval branch of the Galactic Empire's military. It was created in the wake of the Clone Wars, when Chancellor Palpatine transformed the Galactic Republic he led into an authoritarian Empire.[1] Consisting mainly of of Star Destroyers[2] and TIE fighters,[3] the Imperial Navy favored starships with straight-lined shapes.[4] It was tasked with maintaining order in the galaxy.[1] There existed a form of rivalry between the Navy and the Imperial Army,[5] and some naval officers were very critical of their colleagues, accusing them of being pompous, unimaginative and arrogant.[6]
