"That doesn't look like any Star Destroyer I've ever seen. How did they snag us?"
―ZO-E3 upon sighting the Interdictor[src]

The Interdictor-class was a model of Star Destroyer derived from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer that was active during the Imperial Era. The Galactic Empire utilized the Interdictor-class and the other models of the Imperial-class to inspect vessels along their patrol routes. As an interdictor vessel, it had four gravity well projectors, and was 1,600 meters in length. Admiral Gable Karius, commander of the Imperial garrison stationed at Fortress Vader on Mustafar, utilized one such Interdictor to capture a smuggler, their First Mate, and their starship, the Windfall.

Characteristics

"What in the… galaxy? That's impossible, something's pulled us out of hyperspace and put us down in the Atravis sector. We're in the Outer Rim."
―ZO-E3, upon the Windfall's capture[src]

The Interdictor-class was a class of 1,600 meter-long Star Destroyer and interdictor vessel, derived from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer.[1] It was equipped with four gravity well projectors, a ventral hangar,[3] two deflector shield generators[2] atop its command structure,[3] and a ventral solar ionization reactor[2] between its projectors.[3] The Interdictor-class was additionally equipped with three Destroyer-I ion engines and four Gemon-4 ion engines for emergency use.[2] The interior of the Interdictor-class consisted of hallways and compartments, which included walls lined with controls and at least one viewscreen that could be used to communicate with other starships.[3]

Role

Admiral Karius transmits from the Interdictor-class.

Interdictor-class starships at times deployed with other Imperial-class Star Destroyers of the Galactic Empire to pull vessels from hyperspace at key locations along their patrol route and board them for inspection.[1]

History

"This is Admiral Karius of the Galactic Empire. Surrender control of your ship immediately."
―Admiral Karius from the Interdictor, to the Windfall[src]

One such Interdictor was under the command of Admiral Gable Karius, commander of the garrison stationed on Fortress Vader, above Mustafar[3] between 2 BBY and 0 BBY.[4] During the vessel's time above the volcanic planet, it captured the smuggling starship Windfall, pulling it out of hyperspace and placing it above Mustafar. ZO-E3, First Mate of the Windfall, remarked confusion on how they could have been caught in hyperspace and placed in the Atravis sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[3]

After an encounter with TIE fighters and once the Interdictor-class came in view of the Windfall's cockpit, ZO-E3 stated that the Star Destroyer was unlike one she had previously witnessed. They were soon contacted by Admiral Karius who communicated via a two-way viewscreen from the Interdictor. After announcing himself, Admiral Karius ordered the Windfall to cede control of their ship to the Interdictor. After some initial backlash, the crew conceded and allowed the Empire to take control and move it the ship from Mustafar's orbit to the hangar of Fortress Vader on the surface while under TIE escort.[3]

Behind the scenes

"The script only ever just referred to it as a Star Destroyer."
―Pablo Hidalgo, on Twitter[src]

The Interdictor-class was first named in the twentieth issue of Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon by De Agostini,[1] which was released around May 20, 2015.[5] The Interdictor-class made its visual debut in a promotional image announcing Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series – Episode I, the first episode of the Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series produced by ILMxLAB[6] and later appeared in the virtual reality video game which released on May 21, 2019.[7] The Interdictor-class was simply referred to as a Star Destroyer in the script for Vader Immortal according to Lucasfilm Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo.[8]

The Interdictor-class initially appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity as the Interdictor-class Star Destroyer, first appearing[9] in the 1996[10] comic X-wing Rogue Squadron 5[9] that was released on February 13.[10] The comic was authored by Darko Macan and Michael A. Stackpole, with illustrations provided by Edvin Biukovic.[9] The vessel subsequently received its name in The Official Star Wars Fact File 21, which was released in 2002.[11]
