"Ion Control" is the third short story of the 2020 anthology book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. It was written by Emily Skrutskie and focuses on the Rebel Alliance communications officer Toryn Farr.

Plot Summary[]

Toryn Farr is stationed in Echo Base monitoring anomalies in Hoth's atmosphere when she is dragged into a discussion about whether Han Solo will have any success courting Princess Leia Organa. Out of entertainment options, she has joined a betting pool and bet against Han Solo's chances. She is present when Han informs Leia that he is leaving the Rebel Alliance to pay off his debts to Jabba the Hutt and the two storm off to continue their argument elsewhere. Corporal Sunsbringer suggests one of the team follow them to see what occurs next. Farr shuts him down, insisting they return to their work.

The Galactic Empire discovers the base and General Carlist Rieekan gives the evacuation order. Farr jumps in action, communicating with ion control and calculating the vector to fire to cover the first transport. It is a successful hit; the Star Destroyer Tyrant is disabled and the Quantom Storm escapes.

The ceiling of the room collapses during the fighting. Sunsbringer is injured and must evacuate. When she leaves her seat, Farr replaces her at the controls. Farr sees Organa arrive in the room and remarks that she should have already evacuated, but Leia points out Farr should have evacuated as well. The two continue their work and try to clear the remaining five transports.

Han Solo arrives to check on Organa and demands she evacuate. A warning sounds indicating that Imperial troops have entered the base. Organa orders Commander Chiffonage to use the last remaining comm station to order a total evacuation. She watches Chiffonage direct all troops from Sector Twelve to the south slope.

One transport remains and Farr runs for it, successfully arriving at the Bright Hope. She finds her sister on the transport, injured but alive, and the two hug as the Bright Hope departs.
