"I like this planet. You'll serve as collateral to avoid any unnecessary conflict."
―Izuma, to Haru[1]

Izuma was a humanoid warlord who led a band of raiders that operated in the Outer Rim. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the raiders found and reprogrammed B1-series battle droids on the planet Keelia, which they used to form an army. Izuma's raiders demanded the chief of Meevai Village on Keelia as collateral to avoid conflict, but his granddaughter Haru volunteered to take his place. When Izuma arrived to take Haru, he revealed that his forces had captured her sister Saku, who had attempted to resist the raiders. Izuma aimed his blaster at Saku and fired at point-blank range, but the bolt was stopped by the Jedi Padawan F, who sent it back at Izuma's hand. After the explorer Valco defeated Izuma's battle droids, Izuma grabbed Haru and held her at blaster-point. F then drew her lightsaber and propelled herself toward Izuma, cutting off his hand.

Izuma and his raiders

Lord Izuma was a humanoid[1] warlord[4] who lead a band of raiders that operated in the Outer Rim and scavenged technology for their own gain.[3] During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the raiders found and reprogrammed B1-series battle droids that the Confederacy of Independent Systems had left on the planet[1] Keelia[5] after the end of the Clone Wars[1] against the Galactic Republic.[6] They formed an army and took the resources of Meevai Village on Keelia, whose residents were unable to stop them. They also demanded the village chief as collateral, but his granddaughter Haru volunteered to take his place. The night before Izuma and[1] his[2] raiders arrived to take her, Haru married fellow Meevai Village resident Asu. The Jedi Padawan F and the explorer Valco attended the wedding, and a villager spoke to them about the raiders.[1]

Following the wedding, Haru's sister Saku led a group of villagers to resist Izuma and his forces, but they were all captured. In the morning, Izuma and his raiders arrived outside the village in a freighter to take Haru. As the villagers gathered nearby, Izuma met with Haru and confirmed with her that she was the village chief's replacement. Izuma told Haru that he liked the planet and holding her as collateral would prevent unnecessary conflict. He then signaled, and his battle droids revealed that they had captured Saku and found a thermal detonator on her. As Saku knelt, Izuma drew his blaster pistol and aimed it at her. Although Haru begged him to stop, Izuma fired toward Saku at point-blank range. Before the blaster bolt struck her, F froze it with the Force. Izuma stared at the bolt in surprise, then looked at F and demanded to know who she was. F then sent the bolt back toward Izuma, injuring his hand and making him fall to the ground in pain.[1]

As F stepped toward Izuma, he ordered his forces to fire and kill all individuals present. However, Valco began sniping the battle droids from a nearby cliff and then threw his helmet, which propelled itself into Izuma's ship and caused it to explode, deactivating the battle droids. Izuma's remaining forces—a Twi'lek and an Abyssin—then fled. Izuma called them cowards, then picked up a blaster from the ground and grabbed Haru, holding the blaster to her. He looked toward F and screamed at her, asking her if she was a monster. In response, F stated she was a Jedi, then ignited her lightsaber. After a few moments, she used a device in her shoe to propel herself forward and cut off Izuma's hand, causing him to collapse to the ground.[1]

Personality and traits[]

"No exceptions, I'm afraid."
―Izuma, after Haru begs him not to kill Saku[1]

Izuma was a bald humanoid with purple eyes and pale skin[1] and did not blink.[7] He was an opportunist[3] and was cautious and cruel, willing to take hostages and execute captives to ensure compliance and avoid conflict.[1]

Equipment[]

Izuma wore green clothing with a red collar under a black robe, the inside of which was purple. He wore silver-colored rectangular earrings, black gloves, black boots, and a black belt. He wielded a KYD-21 blaster pistol. After losing it, he picked up a different blaster. His raiders used an XS stock light freighter.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

"The director had a particular image in mind for Valco and Izuma. I was given reference to capture that. Izuma is my favorite. For one thing there is no hair to draw! And I don't get the chance that often to play with evil facial expressions."
―Shiori Tani[3]

Izuma first appeared in "The Village Bride," a non-canon short film directed by Hitoshi Haga, written by Haga and Takahito Oonishi, and released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Kinema Citrus, was released on Disney+[1] on September 22, 2021.[8] Prior to the short's release, he was first mentioned in a video uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on July 3, 2021.[7] Izuma was voiced by Yoshimitsu Shimoyama in the original Japanese and by Andrew Kishino in the English dub.[1]

Haga had a particular image in mind for Izuma and gave character designer Shiori Tani a reference to capture it. Tani said that Izuma was her favorite because he had no hair to draw and she did not often get the chance to play with evil facial expressions. Izuma's demanding of Haru as a hostage is similar to the sankin-kōtai system used during the Edo period in Japan, in which the shogun kept rival's families to ensure good behavior.[3]
