"The security deflector shield will be deactivated when we have confirmation of your code transmission."
―Jad Bean[2]

Jad Bean was a Human male Death Star trooper Sergeant who served inside the control room of the second Death Star during the Battle of Endor.[1]

"Inform the commander that Lord Vader's shuttle has arrived."
―Endicott and Bean[1]

Bean was stationed in the Death Star II control room in 4 ABY. He was on duty during the Dark Lord Darth Vader's arrival aboard the battlestation, where one of Vader's shuttle pilots, Captain Yorr, contacted the control room and asked them to lower the deflector shield so they could dock. Bean confirmed the shuttle's code transmission and deactivated the shield, clearing the shuttle to proceed. When the shuttle docked, Lieutenant Endicott ordered Bean to inform the battlestation's commander, Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod, about Vader's arrival aboard the station.[1]

During the final stages of the Battle of Endor, Bean replaced another trooper at the station's superlaser firing switch as Jerjerrod gave the orders to begin rotating the battlestation so it could fire upon Endor's moon.[1] Bean likely fled his post when the Rebel ships began bombarding the Death Star, as Jerjerrod himself took control of the superlaser's firing switch when it was set to fire on the moon.[3]

Jad Bean wore the standard uniform for Imperial Navy troopers.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Jad Bean was played by Stuart Fox, whose role was uncredited in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. He may have been overdubbed by Jonathan Oliver, who was credited as "Star Destroyer Controller #2."[2]

Although he appeared in Return of the Jedi, the character was not given an identity until the release of the Death Star Owner's Technical Manual, where he was named after fan Jad Bean, who is the founder of the Star Wars Micromachines page on Facebook.[4] The photo representing him in the manual, however, was from a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi.
