"Calm down. It's just a mic."
―Jay, to a Gamorrean guard[1]

A blue single-bladed lightsaber belonged to former Jedi Padawan Jay. After the Clone Wars, Jay became a singer in the band Star Waver and converted his lightsaber into a microphone, which he used in his performances.

The human singer Jay owned a single-bladed lightsaber that produced a blue blade when activated.[1] Like all Jedi lightsabers, Jay's saber was powered by a kyber crystal.[2]

After damaging his lightsaber, Jay's weapon no longer functioned well for lightsaber combat. He converted his saber into a microphone, which he used to make music as the lead singer of the band Star Waver.[1]

As a Jedi Padawan, Jay fought with his blue lightsaber[1] as a Jedi Commander[3] during the Clone Wars,[1] a pan-galactic conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[4] Jay fled a battle[1] in 19 BBY upon the issuance of Order 66,[5] which ordered clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic to turn on and kill their Jedi commanders.[4] Jay fell into a vehicle owned by Hutt guitarist[1] Geezer Odajion,[6] damaging his lightsaber in the process. Jay joined Odajion's band, Star Waver, and utilized the lightsaber as a microphone to make music and perform.[1]

Jay's lightsaber failed to activate against bounty hunter Boba Fett.

During the Imperial Era, Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure placed a bounty on Odajion, leading bounty hunters to interrupt a Star Waver concert. Under attack, Jay's bandmates were swift to defend themselves, but Jay feared using his lightsaber for combat. Nevertheless, when bounty hunter Boba Fett captured Odajion, Jay confronted Fett, but his saber failed to ignite. Instead of producing its blue blade, only sparks came from the lightsaber's hilt.[1]

Star Waver negotiated with Jabba to perform their song "Galactic Dreamer" at the Mos Espa Grand Arena[1] on the desert planet[7] Tatooine before Odajion's execution. A Gamorrean guard stopped Jay, believing the lightsaber was a weapon. Jay assured the guard it was only a microphone and was then allowed to perform, using his former weapon to spread his voice in song.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

«This character, Jay, ran away from the war in the past. He struggles a lot between being a Jedi and enjoying his music. By changing the lightsaber into a microphone, we tried to express Jay's wish strongly.»
―Director Taku Kimura, in Japanese[8]

Jay and his lightsaber were created for "Tatooine Rhapsody," a short film in the Star Wars: Visions series directed by Taku Kimura of Studio Colorido,[1] and released for streaming on Disney+ on September 22, 2021.[9] In an interview for Disney+'s "Filmmaker Focus," Kimura said he had the inspiration to create the character Jay to express the power of music. Jay broke free from the restraint of his Jedi past, wishing to rock with Odajion and their bandmates. Kimura told the interviewer that his studio wanted to send the message to do what you want and not be caught up in the past; and converting Jay's lightsaber from weapon to microphone expressed that theme strongly.[10]
