Plot summary[]

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to Gala, where the Beju-Tallah dynasty is stepping down as the planet holds democratic elections, on their first official mission as master and padawan.

On their way to Gala, they are hijacked to Phindar by their Phindian pilot Paxxi Derida, the brother of Obi-Wan's friend Guerra, on the pretext of a fuel leak. The brothers explain that they kidnapped the two Jedi warriors because they need their help to overthrow the criminal organization that has seized control of Phindar. The Syndicat has the technology to erase the minds of prisoners, and they release these "renewed" prisoners either onto the streets or on war-torn planets across the galaxy and bet on how long they'll survive.

The Jedi and the Derida brothers are attacked by assassin droids sent by the Syndicat. They escape and meet with the Deridas' friend Kaadi, who tells them the Syndicat is conducting mass arrests because Prince Beju of Gala is coming to the planet. Beju and the Syndicat have made a deal where the Syndicat will help Beju win the upcoming election and in exchange he will hand over Gala to them.

The Jedi agree to help the Deridas and Kaadi. They break into the Syndicat headquarters that night to open the Syndicat's vault, full of food, medical supplies, and weapons, but they can't get into the treasury without Paxxi's anti-register device that will allow them to trick the vault into accepting their prints. The Syndicat stole it from him, but it is not in the headquarters like they thought.

Duenna, the Deridas' informant in Syndicat headquarters, tells them everything was moved to the spaceport so they can be loaded on Prince Beju's transport and taken to Gala. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Terra, one of the Syndicat's leaders, and the Jedi and their companions are forced to hide until Duenna and Terra leave. The Derida brothers reveal to the Jedi that Duenna is their mother and Terra is their sister, who was renewed when she was eleven and only remembers the Syndicat.

The next night, they break into the spaceport, disguised as Syndicat guards, and find the anti-register device. When Guerra is called to report to security, Obi-Wan switches disguises with him and is taken to headquarters, where he is revealed to be Human. Weutta, the head of security, takes him to the Syndicat leader Baftu. Baftu refuses to see him, however, and Terra is the one who decides Obi-Wan will be renewed and transported offplanet.

Obi-Wan uses the Force to protect himself from the memory-wipe, but he pretends it worked and is taken to Gala. He evades the probot following him. He comes across Prince Beju on his way to his ship, which Obi-Wan hijacks, flying it back to Phindar. He locks Beju in the cargo hold and assumes his identity.

The Derida brothers arrange a meeting the next day with Duenna, who reports that Obi-Wan's sentence has already been carried out. Qui-Gon is stricken, and he plans to strike the Syndicat when Prince Beju arrives because they will be distracted and embarrassed. Kaadi rallies the rebels to join them.

Qui-Gon recognizes Obi-Wan upon his arrival, and he reworks the plan. They strike the Syndicat headquarters while Baftu gives "Beju" a tour, but Terra recognizes Obi-Wan and tries to expose him as an imposter. Obi-Wan pretends to believe this is a ruse to deflect him from seeing the treasury and expresses his doubts about the alliance, and Baftu reassures him, though he cannot deter Terra.

Qui-Gon and the Deridas empty the treasury before Paxxi heads to the warehouses with the anti-register device to distribute the food and weapons. When Baftu sees the treasury is empty, he believes Terra was trying to delay him earlier and orders her killed. In her final moments, Terra regains her memories and reconciles with her family.

Now armed, Phindar rebels rise up against the Syndicat. Qui-Gon gives Obi-Wan his lightsaber, and they join in the battle. Kaadi is injured, and in her defense Paxxi throws his anti-register device at a guard, breaking it. When Baftu tries to escape on Beju's ship, his guards turn against him, and Guerra arrests him on behalf of the Phindian people. Prince Beju, who has escaped the cargo hold, flies himself away.

The Jedi remain on Phindar until the provisional government is set up. They say goodbye to the Derida brothers, who tell them Kaadi is recovering, before heading to Gala.
