The Jedi Temple dojo was a room where members of the Jedi Order trained and practiced in lightsaber combat. Located in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant, Jedi younglings and Padawans alike honed their skills in the dojo. During the Clone Wars, many Jedi, including Ahsoka Tano and Caleb Dume, honed their lightsaber skills in the dojo, practicing various forms.
Description[]
Yoda and Ahsoka Tano prepare to duel in the dojo.
Located in the Jedi Temple on[1] the planet[2] Coruscant,[1] the Jedi Temple dojo[3] was a practice hall for members of the Jedi Order. Any Jedi, including younglings[1] or Padawans,[4] could work on simple lightsaber forms,[1] be tested against training droids,[5] or practice dueling against each other.[4]
The dojo was an wide, open space with room for multiple Jedi to move around. Seating was included in the form of wooden benches for those who wanted to observe training. Jedi Masters would attend sessions to assess progress, and sometimes, a Master would attend with their Padawan learner to let them witness another Jedi train.[5] The walls of the dojo were also wood and were decorated with simple scrolls featuring Jedi emblems or artwork as well as with racks of lightsabers.[4] There were multiple entrances to the room.[5][4] For some trainings, a force field was used to enclose the space and allow a Jedi to train in close quarters.[5]
History[]
- "Caleb Dume, maintain your form, you must."
"I'll try, Master Yoda."
"Do or do not. There is no try." - ―Yoda instructs Caleb Dume on his forms in the Jedi Temple dojo
Ahsoka practices in the dojo against new training remotes
During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, the Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano visited the dojo on multiple occasions for training exercises. On one occasion, Tano worked with Jedi Master Tera Sinube to train against new training remotes that were designed to simulate Separatist battle droids. Masters Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Plo Koon observed the session, with Tano's master, the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker arrived late. Tano was enclosed in a circular force field in the center of the dojo to simulate close-quarter combat. After being put through the paces by Sinube and performing well, Tano was pleased with her success. However, Skywalker felt that the exercise had not been challenging and left the dojo visibly dissatisfied, which Tano was upset by. The two spoke outside the dojo and then arranged another training session that Skywalker felt was of a suitable degree of difficulty.[5]
Yoda working with several Jedi Initiates
Some time later, in 21 BBY,[6] Tano would return to the dojo with Skywalker to practice wielding two lightsabers in the style of Jar'Kai. Yoda soon arrived and asked to see Tano's progress, and although Tano was nervous, having just begun practicing with two blades, Yoda wanted to fight her himself. After Tano struggled, Yoda encouraged her to let her personality fuel her fighting style, which helped Tano's confidence.[4] As her experience with both lightsabers grew, Tano would visit the dojo with her friend and fellow Padwawn Barriss Offee to spar. Watched by three others, the two dueled, with Tano getting the better of Offee after employing improvisational tactics. Tano was happy with the result, but Offee did not feel that Tano's strategies would work in a real battle and insisted that her peer focus on using the proper forms instead of using tricks. The two disagreed about their fighting styles, but decided that it was a result of having very different Jedi Masters instructing them.[7] Around 19 BBY,[8] the younglings Caleb Dume, Sammo Quid, and Tai Uzuma practiced their lightsaber forms in the dojo with Grand Master Yoda.[1]
Experiencing a vision, Kanan battles a Jedi Guardian in the dojo
Many years after the fall of the Jedi Order, the Jedi survivor Kanan Jarrus,[9] formerly Caleb Dume,[10] experienced a vision of the Jedi Temple dojo while in the Lothal Jedi Temple on[9] the planet[11] Lothal[9] in 3 BBY.[12] He approached a Jedi Temple Guard and asked for knowledge on how to defeat Darth Vader, but the Guard only warned him that trying to fight would result in his death and cause his apprentice, Ezra Bridger, to become a servant of the dark side. Jarrus would battle the guard, as well as two others that appeared, grabbing another lightsaber from the wall and fighting with both blades. When Jarrus began to lose the fight and the guard began to taunt him about not being able to protect Bridger, Jarrus realized that the guard was right. Sitting on the floor of the dojo, he and admitted that the could not protect Bridger forever, not even from himself. Jarrus accepted defeat, but instead of striking him down, the guard, who had taken the form of The Grand Inquisitor, knighted Jarrus as a Jedi Knight. As the dojo began to collapse, Jarrus' vision ended and he returned to the Lothal Temple.[9]
