The Jedi Training Droids were a model of droid used for various purposes in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant including verbally teaching a Padawan about Force-enhanced abilities and lightsaber practice. While a range of different forms and models existed, the droids were primarily skeletal bipeds, based on a humanoid frame.
Housed within the sparring chambers of the Jedi Temple, the droids were activated to act as sparring partners for Jedi Padawans and Knights. Although the training rooms differed in design, several training chambers in the First Knowledge Quarter contained statues of Jedi surrounding a sunken floor. The droids were deployed through the chest of these statues and would proceed to duel the Jedi until they were deactivated. Others were made to shoot electricity through their fingertips, in an attempt to replicate Force lightning.
The reclusive Jedi technician Kazdan Paratus was in charge of maintaining and creating new and specialized droids to use in the sparring chambers. Anakin Skywalker was also known to crowd the halls of the Temple with new droids, some of which he did use for sparring practice.
Training remotes were another form of droids used and stored in the Temple during the Old Republic.
Notable Temple training droids[]
JTR-47[]
JTR-47 was one of the verbal instructors of the Temple training course. He supervised the Padawans as they moved from room to room, attempting to complete the challenges set up therein. JTR-47 had the opportunity to help train young Obi-Wan Kenobi.[1]
Training Droid 1138[]
This droid, known only by its service number of 1138, was one of many droids used by the Order to teach Jedi. 1138 helped to instruct in the ways of lightsaber combat and Force Throw.[1]
Training Droid 32P2[]
This droid, also known only by its service number, was another of many droids that helped trained Jedi. It wielded a standard blaster and was used to instruct Jedi in the art of blaster-bolt deflection.[1]
BCA-11/X lightsaber practice droid[]
This model of droid created by Baktoid Combat Automata was specifically designed to face combat against Master-Padawan teams. The BCA-11/Xs were equipped with blasters and often attacked in groups.
Advanced Jedi Training Droid 6[]
Advanced Jedi Training Droids were used for more specialized tasks then just sparring. At least one droid, Advanced Jedi Training Droid 6, was used to referee sparring matches between Jedi younglings. It was in use around 45 BBY. The Advanced Jedi Training Droid model had a number of sensors that allowed it to record not only the actions of the two combatants, but also their physiological state, such as heart rate. AJTDroid 6 was an observer to the unauthorized fight between Bruck Chun and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and later helped the members of the Jedi Council to understand that Bruck Chun had framed Kenobi.
Behind the scenes[]
Both JTR-47 and droid 1138 appear at least twice during the 2001 video game Star Wars: Obi-Wan's training course. While possible that there were more than one of both droids, their names were most likely just recycled during development.
Droid 1138 is one of many references to George Lucas's first film, THX 1138.
