- "…a ship…a cup…a ship…a speeder."
- ―Anakin Skywalker
The Jedi testing screen was a portable viewscreen used by members of the Jedi Order to test potential candidates for training.[2]
The testing screen was devoid of any buttons or controls, and was instead activated by the Force.[2] The device was programmed to display a series of unconnected holographic images on the screen, held out of view of the student, who would then attempt to divine the object shown using the Force. Anakin Skywalker was notably tested by Mace Windu and the Jedi High Council using a testing screen in 32 BBY.
Description[]

A deactivated Jedi test screen.
The testing screen was a small handheld[1] multi-function viewscreen[2] utilized by the Jedi Order to test an inductee's divination abilities, a rudimentary identifiable example of Force use[1] or to practice a Knight's skill. It included a removable memory cell in which standard tests were stored; the cell was stored in the device's handgrip and could be removed to access the test results. A tension band was mounted on the top of the device, directly above the screen which was powered by a single power cell connected to the rear of the device.[2]
The sequence of images displayed on the viewscreen were unconnected and followed each other with extreme speed, allowing only a Force-attuned individual to perceive them. The tester watched the screen and directed the flow of the images with the Force, as the device lacked any buttons or controls,[2] allowing only capable Jedi Masters to use them.[1] A series of infographics including the test series indicator and the ability testing sequence appeared on the top and bottom of the screen along with the test images to assist the tester with the procedure.[2]
History[]
In 32 BBY, after Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn rescued former slave Anakin Skywalker from his master Watto on Tatooine, he brought him before the Jedi High Council on Coruscant where several Masters, including Mace Windu and Yoda tested his abilities using a testing screen. Although the child was successful in identifying images including starships and a speeder, the Council elected not to take him in the Order due to his old age.[1]
