"Crates?!!? I hate 'em. Worst thing that ever happened to the universe. And did you know that there are people mass producing them? I could not believe it."
Riyan Kiner to a spacer[1]

The Joben Crate Company was a Corellian manufacturing company near Coronet that produced crates. It was owned by Talan Joben.[1]

History[]

"I just said...someone has attacked my company and destroyed my precious crates. That's what happened."
Talan Joben, to a spacer[1]

The crate manufacturing site after the attack

By the time of the Battle of Yavin, the Joben Crate Company manufactured crates that were sold throughout the galaxy.[1]

In 1 ABY,[2] the company was attacked and many of their crate manufacturing machines as well as most crates were destroyed. A spacer investigated this attack for Corellia Times reporter Vani Korr to find out if this was the work of the machine-hating Meatlumps. The spacer found a datapad among the destroyed machines with a message saying that bombs had been planted in Joben-brand crates and placed near hotels on several planets. The adventurer located all the bombs just in time and also found evidence that led to the culprit of these terrorist attempts: the insane retired adventurer Riyan Kiner, who had targeted the company because of his boundless hate of crates.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Joben Crate Company appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[3] The Joben Crate Company was added to the game with the update dubbed "Chapter 10: The Search for the Meatlump King," released on June 19, 2008.[4]

  2. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
