John Powell (born September 18, 1963[1]) is a British film composer who composed the music score for 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story. He is the head composer of DreamWorks Animation.

Powell grew up loving the 19th century orchestral music of composers Brahms, Sibelius, and Tchaikovsky, before encountering the rock music of Queen, Thin Lizzy, and Bruce Springsteen. His eclectic blend of musical tastes then expanded to Björk, Massive Attack, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and, closer to his work on Solo, the Punch Brothers, Parno Graszt, and Childish Gambino's album "Awaken, My Love!". Coincidentally, Gambino is the stage name of actor Donald Glover, who portrayed Lando Calrissian in Solo.[2]

The score of Solo: A Star Wars Story was recorded in 2018 mainly at Abbey Road Studios. The Enfys Nest theme features a Bulgarian women's choir, Vanya Moneva, whose voices were recorded in the same year in Sofia, Bulgaria.[3]
