K-3PO was a masculine 3PO protocol droid who served as a captain in the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. He was stationed at Echo Base on the planet Hoth, where he was charged with organizing the base's droidpool. He was destroyed due to falling debris when the Rebel command center sustained enemy fire during the Battle of Hoth.
Biography[]
Manufactured by Cybot Galactica,[3] K-3PO[4] served in the military of the Alliance to Restore the Republic[4] by the year 3 ABY,[1] during the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire.[2] The protocol droid worked in the military command center of Echo Base on the ice planet Hoth, where it monitored troop movements, personally delivered messages, and also operated the loudspeaker announcement systems.[4] He was also put in charge of organizing the Echo Base droidpool.[8]
K-3PO was monitoring a tactical screen when Captain Han Solo informed the General, Carlist Rieekan of his intention to leave Rebellion and pay off his debt to the Hutt[2] crime lord[9] Jabba Desilijic Tiure. During the Imperial invasion of Hoth, the droid was present in the main command center when the Rebels lowered Echo Base's shield and fired off the Battle of Hoth's opening shots from Echo Base's[2] v-150 Planet Defender[10] ion cannon, allowing their first transport to escape the orbiting Imperial fleet. K-3PO was present when patrols were launched and any remaining ground staff were ordered to evacuate. However, the droid was destroyed by falling debris when the command center sustained damage from enemy fire before the last Rebel transport departed Echo Base.[2]
Characteristics[]
K-3PO was a 3PO protocol droid with white plating and a pair of yellow[2] photoreceptors.[4] The droid stood 1.67 meters in height[5] and weighed 75 kilograms.[6] A pair of red pips were on the right side of his pectoral plating, indicating his rank of captain.[3] K-3PO was proficient in over 8 million forms of communication,[11] and the droid's memory banks were full of battle tactics.[12]
Behind the scenes[]
K-3PO first appeared in the new Star Wars canon in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back,[2] where it was portrayed by Chris Parsons,[13] who was also a stand-in for Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and played 4-LOM.[13] The droid was first identifed by Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, a reference book written by Adam Bray, Kerrie Dougherty, Cole Horton, and Michael Kogge[14] and released on September 4, 2015.[15] The name K-3PO was originally created for the second edition of Galaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back, a 1996 supplement written by Michael Stern and Pablo Hidalgo for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, which retconned[16] the "Coordinator Droid" that first appeared in NPR's Star Wars Legends The Empire Strikes Back radio dramatization,[17] first broadcast on February 14, 1983,[18] into being one and the same as Chris Parsons' protocol droid extra.[16]
