Kalaan was a planet in the Kalaan system and home to a large Rebel base as of 0 BBY. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire launched an invasion of the planet. The Battle of Kalaan reduced Kalaan City to rubble and routed the Rebels.
The planet was occupied by the Empire and portions, if not all, of the planet were denuded of all flora. A resistance movement among the Kalaanite population continued fighting the Empire, but was unable to drive it off the planet.
An Imperial prison was also constructed. In 3 ABY, the prison housed Luke Skywalker and Brenn Tantor. Tantor, an Imperial general who was being court-martialed, escaped and defected to the Alliance with the help of his stormtrooper squad, taking Skywalker with him.
