"I'm disappointed with you, Kaliyo. You were never a believer, but siding with the Empire?"
"I didn't want to pick a side."
―Kaliyo Djannis and the Wheezer, before Kaliyo kills him[src]

Kaliyo Djannis was a female Rattataki who lived during the Cold War. She was an anarchistic freelance criminal in the Revolutionary Edge Brigade, and according to her CorSec criminal report, she was known to associate with three individuals named Anspi'shel, Nohn Veyaiko, and The Wheezer. Kaliyo eventually settled briefly on Hutta while working under Nem'ro the Hutt. But she would soon leave the planet after partnering with Cipher Nine, to which the pair worked as operatives and carried out missions for Imperial Intelligence. Following the Eternal Empire's conquest of the galaxy, Kaliyo journeyed to Zakuul and took up the moniker of an anarchist codename Firebrand. Under the guise of Firebrand, Kaliyo began independently striking against the Zakuulan government, before joining the Outlander's Alliance against the Eternal Empire.

Biography

Kaliyo was born on Rattatak but grew disenchanted with the "backward ways" of her people and escaped her homeworld at a young age. She proceeded to find employment as a freelance enforcer and assassin for major criminal syndicates (Exchange, Hutt Cartel) and individual underworld figures (Rholl). She also had persistent links to Brentaal Four anarchist cells (see Revolutionary Edge Brigade) though she maintained minimal activity within Imperial borders.[1]

Cold War

At one time, Kaliyo was once in a relationship with Doctor Archiban Kimble, nicknamed "Doc".[3]

One of Kaliyo's acquaintances went grave robbing on the Sith homeworld of Korriban. He was lucky to have only lost his tongue to the Sith. Korriban, Kaliyo believed, wasn't "my kind of place."

In the Curovao Bombing, Kaliyo went under the alias of Lisha Tetch,[2] according to Watcher X.

Kaliyo was under the employ of Suudaa Nem'ro during the Cold War, at the same time the Sith Empire dispatched an undercover operative, under the alias of the known pirate, the Red Blade, to secure an alliance with Nem'ro. After the mysterious murder of Nem'ro's lieutenant, Karrels Javis, Kaliyo confronted the agent. The agent introduced her to the Keeper of Imperial Intelligence, who offered to hire her services, which she accepted, though she refused to be called a "servant" of the Empire.

Later on, when Nem'ro became ill, Kaliyo was sent to collect a cure for the Hutt cooked up by her ex-boyfriend, Doc, on a Defender-class light corvette. There, she met the Hero of Tython, a Jedi Knight who would one day destroy the Sith Emperor. While waiting for the cure, she told the Jedi that she thought that Doc was a "worm" and she was "usually worshiped by men beneath her." She wanted to know if there was anything worth eating on this "rust bucket." After the cure was done, she stepped off the ship to take it to Nem'ro, leaving Doc without someone to "help us celebrate."[3]

Kaliyo continued to be an associate of Cipher Nine. Cipher Nine aided her in rescuing one of her old partners, Anspi'shel, from the Exchange though Kaliyo held a grudge against her and may have followed up by selling her out to a local bounty hunter in Nar Shaddaa.

Kaliyo managed to persuade Imperial Intelligence to target her ex-partners. Cipher Nine also aided her in dealing with some of her ex-partners who were seeking her out. These partners include Rholl, Yjal, Ta Tigal, and a bounty hunter called "The Menace."

Doctor Eckard Lokin discovered that Kaliyo has been in contact with the Revolutionary Edge Brigade which is in violation of a number of Imperial regulations. Kaliyo claims that The Wheezer needed her help and that her discretion was in a way meant to keep Cipher Nine out of trouble. Kaliyo claims she only wanted to help an old friend and meant no harm to the agent. To assuage Cipher Nine's concerns, she invites Cipher Nine to come with her to a scheduled meeting with the Revolutionary Edge Brigade. When they arrived, the Wheezer reveals that Kaliyo had been selling the Revolutionary Edge Brigade Imperial secrets; though she claims she never revealed anything about Cipher Nine's missions. When the Wheezer revealed his intention to harvest Cipher Nine's organs in order to bypass Imperial security, Kaliyo was forced to pick a side and helped Cipher Nine fight the Revolutionary Edge Brigade. After Kaliyo finished off the Wheezer, Cipher Nine agreed to keep Kaliyo as an asset but warned her that her selling Imperial secrets couldn't continue.

Second Great Galactic War

As war reignited between the Republic and Empire, Nine's team was tasked to discover a mysterious third party that destroyed the Shadow Arsenal. Their search took them to Belsavis and Voss, and learned that the organization was called the Star Cabal. Unfortunately, the conspiracy became aware of Nine's attempts to expose them and used their influence to dissolve Imperial Intelligence. Nine's team was drafted into Lord Razer's unit, but Kaliyo arrested due to her criminal record. Despite Nine's pleads on her behalf, Razer would not yield. As Kaliyo screamed promises of revenge, Nine told her to wait for an opportunity.

Sometime later, as the battle for Corellia raged, the Minister of Intelligence, formerly Keeper, secretly sprung Kaliyo from custody as he gathered the remnants of Intelligence to take down the Star Cabal. Kaliyo performed jobs for the Minister and the new Keeper, formerly Watcher Two. Though she received meager pay, Kaliyo stayed for the purpose of revenge against the conspiracy. She later reunited with Nine for the final mission to take down the Star Cabal.

Becoming Firebrand

During the Eternal Empire's conquest, Nine went missing. Despite never being able to admit it, Kaliyo was affected by Nine's apparent death, and hungered for vengeance against the assailants. In 3637 BBY, she traveled to Zakuul, the seat of the Eternal Empire, where she sought to destroy the "perfect" society in retribution for Nine's disappearance. Under the identity of "Firebrand", she bombed targets on the planet, but no matter what she did, the droids that serviced the Spire always repaired the damage. Afterwards, her attacks got lazy, before Administrator Tayvor Slen of the Overwatch command center convinced her to sell out. He provided her with lodgings and immunity from arrest, in exchange for bombing small targets to bolster Zakuul's recovery from the death of Emperor Valkorion. This made her an outlet for young Zakuulans to experience energetic and dynamic feelings in their lives that had been absent in such a tranquil society as Zakuul. Kaliyo provided her followers with a rush of adrenaline, earning scars that could easily be healed by droids. Kaliyo even shared a passionate affair with Tayvor, before later waking up from her daydream to resume her terrorist activities.[4]

Two years later, Kaliyo's spotlight was soon stolen by the individual known as the Outlander, after an incident at a droid factory made the Zakuulans more afraid of the Outlander than Kaliyo herself. The defamation infuriated Kaliyo, as she had been attacking the Spire for years without any such fearful reaction. A few months after the Outlander's appearance, Kaliyo managed to cause enough damage to get the individual's attention. Along with Theron Shan, the Outlander approached Kaliyo, offering her a place in their Alliance against the Eternal Empire. Kaliyo agreed to consider the offer if the Outlander aided her sabotage if the Eternal Empire's droid-run network. After the preparations and planning were finished, the pair assaulted the Overwatch command center, where they were confronted by Tayvor. After fatally wounding him, she revealed to Tayvor that she used his daughter Alianna to plant explosives around the city, tormenting him as he expired. Kaliyo then revealed that she intended to not only shut down the droids, but set off dozens of explosives around the Spire. The initial damage, combined with the lack of droid support, would cause the deaths of thousands of Zakuulan civilians. The Outlander had their own say in the matter, convincing Kaliyo whether to go through with her murderous plot or not. Regardless of the Outlander's treatment towards Kaliyo's plan, she finally accepted the offer to join the Alliance.

Afterwards, Kaliyo traveled to the Outlander's base on the planet Odessen, promising to participate in any significant missions undergone in the future. When the Alliance made a plan of to attack a Zakuulan Knight outpost in the Endless Swamp, Kaliyo was summoned, fighting alongside Theron Shan, Lana Beniko, and Senya Tirall. The mission was a success, and despite the Alliance taking some casualties, Kaliyo survived. In the aftermath of the mission, a mysterious "GEMINI Frequency" was revealed by the soldiers of Havoc Squad. The frequency was a signal that transmitted commands from the Eternal Throne to a hyperwave relay station on Zakuul, which broadcast the orders to the invincible Eternal Fleet. With this knowledge, the Alliance had the target it needed to defeat the Eternal Empire. Along with Major Aric Jorgan, Kaliyo returned to Zakuul and prepared to assault the relay station. At the briefing, Kaliyo urged the Outlander to help her take control of the Eternal Fleet by slicing the transmitter. This was in direct opposition to Jorgan's plan to destroy the relay station and simply sever its control from Emperor Arcann. As commander of the Alliance, the Outlander decided whose plan to go through with. Regardless, the mission ends up a failure, but Kaliyo managed to steal a database on GEMINI droids at the cost of the lives of some Havoc Squad soldiers.

Kaliyo Djannis

Cipher Nine: "Allow me to present Kaliyo Djannis, my loyal and trusted associate."
Peyar Cortess: "Such an exotic young woman…how is it you come to be here?"
Kaliyo: "I slid out of mama's womb and picked up a blaster. Now I'm your new friend's bodyguard. Course, you and me could be friends, too. You've got a nice place here—I could stick around awhile."
―Kaliyo displays some of her wit and charm. — (audio) Listen (file info)[src]

Kaliyo Djannis is playful, but extremely manipulative. According to Watcher X and Anspi'shel, mostly everything she says about herself is a lie. Kaliyo even told false stories of her life to Cipher Nine just to keep the agent under her string.

Kaliyo is a sociopath, having absolutely no regard for her comrades or "friends" whatsoever, and is highly intelligent. For instance, she tracked her "friend" Anspi'shel just so Kaliyo could sell her and take the bounty on her head, and had even tricked Cipher Nine into helping her. In another instance, she made Tayvor Slen feel special, before robbing him of his valuables.

She also learned how to speak in Kaleesh, particularly in profanities. Eckard Lokin described it as a "rare and admirable skill." She was highly amoral, but even she was disgusted by Darth Jadus's cruelty. As much as she wanted to see Jadus dead, she preferred watching him being humiliated.

Behind the scenes

Kaliyo Djannis is a companion character for the Imperial Agent class of Star Wars: The Old Republic. She is voiced by Tasia Valenza.

Kaliyo becomes a companion for all class characters following the completion of Chapter X: Anarchy in Paradise in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion.

Romance

A male Imperial Agent can romance and eventually marry her. This romance can continue in Chapter X: Anarchy in Paradise, or players can choose to break up with her.

Gameplay alternatives

In Chapter X: Anarchy in Paradise, Kaliyo gives the player the option of destroying the Spire, which grants dark side points. Alternatively, the player can let Kaliyo use the detonator herself, granting dark side points, or convince her to relent, in which she only targets the Spire's droid population, granting light side points. Imperial Agents that romanced Kaliyo will also be given an opportunity to continue that relationship.

In Chapter XII: Visions in the Dark, the player can choose between sending Kaliyo or Aric Jorgan to target the GEMINI frequency while the other performs a diversion. If Jorgan is chosen, the player will encounter another choice, deciding to allow or forbid Kaliyo from reinforcing Jorgan. Regardless of the decision, Kaliyo goes anyway.

In Chapter XIII: Profit and Plunder, if the player had sent Jorgan to destroy the GEMINI frequency, and forbade Kaliyo from reinforcing him, then her fate can be altered. Players can forgive Kaliyo and keep her around as a companion, or they can exile or kill her as punishment for disobeying a direct order.

In Chapter XIV, Mandalore's Revenge, if the player had killed Kaliyo in the previous chapter, her death will be briefly referenced.

In Chapter XVI: The Battle of Odessen, if Kaliyo remains alive and part of the Alliance, she will choose to stay on Odessen and defend the Alliance base in case of a ground invasion. Imperial Agents that romanced Kaliyo will also have a brief scene to talk with her before leaving on the Gravestone.

In Chapter IV: Where Dreams Die, if Kaliyo remains alive and part of the Alliance, she will appear on the Gravestone and on Iokath. Players will also have a chance to talk with her midway through the chapter and get her opinion on the situation.

In Chapter V: Ascension, if Kaliyo remains alive and part of the Alliance, she will appear on the Gravestone and on Iokath. Players can also choose to take her with them when confronting ARIES near the end of the chapter.

In Chapter VIII: End Times, if Kaliyo remains alive and part of the Alliance, players can encounter her briefly on the battlefield fighting for the Alliance.

In Chapter IX: The Eternal Throne, if Kaliyo remains alive and part of the Alliance, she will appear on Gravestone and in the Alliance base. Imperial Agents that romanced Kaliyo will have a brief scene with her before departing for Zakuul.
