- "And it turns out, spiders are not the most unique thing in Ghorman. There's a mineral underground."
- ―Orson Krennic
Kalkite, also known as Ghorman Kalkite, was a mineral found on the planet Ghorman in deep substrate foliated deposits. The Galactic Empire orchestrated the Ghorman Massacre in order to extract Ghorman's kalkite and use it in the construction of the Death Star.
Description[]
- "Kalkite. Synthetic kalkite. Kalkite alternatives. Kalkite substitutes. I mean, the amount of time spent pondering this grubby little bit of rock is sadly astonishing."
- ―Orson Krennic
A mineral in the galaxy that could be used to coat reactor lenses to help generate vast amounts of energy. The planet Ghorman had deposits of deep substrate foliated kalkite.[1]
History[]
By 4 BBY, the Galactic Empire became aware of its need for the deposits of Kalkite on Ghorman in order to complete Project Stardust. Extracting the kalkite would, however, be an invasive process of gouge mining that could destabilize the planet's core and cause a total collapse. Due to Ghorman's wealth and political power, the Empire began an Anti-Ghorman whispering campaign to turn galactic opinion against the Ghorman people. In 4 BBY, Director Orson Krennic assembled a select group of Imperial officials in the Maltheen Divide to discuss further plans to destabilize Ghorman's image and allow for the extract of its Kalkite. Meanwhile the project's scientists would explored substitutes and alternatives to the mineral.[1] In 2 BBY, after exploring the alternatives the Empire began landing mining equipment on Ghorman while it orchestrated a genocide which would become known as the Ghorman Massacre.[2]
