"Don't live for someone else! As long as you're alive, then you are free! And you're free to choose your own destiny!"
―Karre, to Am[2]

Karre was a Force-sensitive human male clone who, like his twin sister, Am, was secretly created through the dark side of the Force and raised to become a Dark Lord of a remnant of the Galactic Empire known as the T-Empire. At some point, Karre saw a vision of Am's death as a result of her using the power of a kyber crystal. After the Battle of Exegol of 35 ABY, while on board a Gemini-class Star Destroyer, Karre stole the kyber crystal that powered both the twins' dark armor and the Star Destroyer's hyper cannon superweapon to prevent Am from using its power. After taking the Star Destroyer's power core and the kyber crystal within it, Karre attempted to escape but was confronted by Am. With the help of his astromech droid companion R-DUO, Karre stole a T-X-wing starfighter and piloted it out of the Star Destroyer. Before he could escape, however, Am used the Force to pull Karre back onto the surface of the ship.

The two twins fought for control of the power core until it shattered, revealing the kyber crystal inside, which also eventually shattered as their fight continued. Both twins then saw the vision of Am's death, and Karre tried to persuade Am not to use the crystal's power. Instead, she placed a piece of it into her armor and attacked Karre with multiple lightwhips. Karre fought back but was eventually launched into space by Am. He was caught by R-DUO in their X-wing and then saw that Am's armor had overloaded and she had lost control of it. To save her, Karre flew toward Am and ignited his lightsaber, the blade of which became large. With the power of the X-wing's hyperdrive, he was then able to cut through the Star Destroyer and Am's armor, destroying the kyber crystal and saving her. Karre and R-DUO then completed their jump to hyperspace and later crashed on the planet Tatooine.

Biography[]

Creation[]

"This is our mission, as twins created through the power of the dark side."
―Am, to B-2ON[2]
AmKarreCultists-THETWINS

Dark forces planned for Karre and Am to rule the galaxy.

Karre was a Force-sensitive human male clone who, along with his twin sister, Am, was[1] secretly[3] created through advanced cloning technology and the dark side of the Force. Karre was raised from birth to become a Dark Lord in the army of a remnant of the Galactic Empire known as the T-Empire,[1] who planned for the twins to rule the galaxy.[4] During the process of their creation, the twins were watched by Sith cultists. Am and Karre were later cared for by the droid B-2ON,[2] who was also their loyal servant. The astromech droid R-DUO also served the twins and became a loyal friend to Karre.[5] At one point while the twins were standing with a number of the cultists, Karre saw a vision of Am's death as a result of her using the power of a kyber crystal.[6]

Stealing the kyber crystal[]

"The power source from the reactor core appears to have been stolen! We cannot charge the hyper cannon."
"What? But only Master Am and Master Karre can access the reactor core chamber—"
―A T-Imperial crew member and B-2ON[2]
KarreKyberCrystal-THETWINS

Karre stole the kyber crystal to save his sister.

At some point after the Battle of Exegol of 35 ABY,[7] Karre and Am were both aboard a Gemini-class Star Destroyer as the final adjustments to it and its planet-destroying hyper cannon superweapon were being completed. Along with R-DUO, Karre walked between two lines of T-Stormtroopers and entered the Star Destroyer's reactor core chamber, where he stole the power core and the kyber crystal within it that powered both the ship and the dark armor used by the twins, which he planned to escape with in order to save Am.[2]

In her throne room, Am listened as B-2ON reported to her the status of the adjustments being made. B-2ON stated that[2] he[5] had watched Am and Karre grow and would be able to watch as they completed their mission. Am responded that she and her brother would bring order to the galaxy. B-2ON then continued his report, explaining that the hyper cannon was charging and would be at full strength, but that he was worried about the effects that their dark armor—which, like the hyper cannon, was powered by dark energy from the kyber crystal—would have on Am and Karre's bodies. Just as Am gave the order to fire the weapon, an alarm sounded and they received a report from a T-Imperial crew member that the reactor core's power source had been stolen, preventing the hyper canon from being charged. B-2ON was surprised, as only Am and Karre could access the reactor core chamber, but when Am turned to look across the ship to Karre's throne room, she saw it was empty and realized he must have stolen the power core.[2]

Attempting to escape[]

"What do you want to do with the power core? Are you planning to turn it over to the Republic?"
"The Galactic Empire or the Republic, I couldn't care less about either of them!"
―Am and Karre[2]
AmStopsKarre

Am confronted Karre as he attempted to escape.

As Karre walked with R-DUO through the ship, he reassured his droid that they would not be caught. However, when Karre opened a door, they were confronted by several T-Stormtroopers. Karre walked past them, ignoring their requests to stop. When they shot stun blasts at him, Karre used the Force to freeze the shots and then, after apologizing to them, pushed the soldiers into the corridor's wall. Karre and R-DUO continued until they reached a hangar, where they planned to escape in a T-X-wing starfighter. Before they could reach it, they were confronted by Am, B-2ON, a larger group of T-Stormtroopers, and two All Terrain Scout Transports.[2]

At Karre's signal, R-DUO slipped away to steal their X-wing. Am attempted to persuade Karre to return the stolen power core, while B-2ON expressed his disappointment. In response, Karre removed his helmet and threw it to the floor, and then pressed a button on his dark armor, destroying it. After hearing Karre's refusal, Am asked if he intended to give the power core to the Republic. Karre replied that he did not care about the Republic or the Empire, but that Am would not understand his motives if he explained them. Am then said she would take the power core by force, igniting two of her lightsabers and preparing to attack Karre. Just as she did, R-DUO powered up the X-wing and fired on Am, who used the Force to project a barrier that deflected its shots into her own forces while Karre escaped. Once Karre made it into the starfighter's cockpit, he piloted it out of the hangar and away from the Star Destroyer.[2]

Dueling Am[]

"Kyber crystal. What beauty. Such power. This energy will be the beacon of hope for the galaxy! Now come to me!"
"I won't let you have it. This power it holds is anything but hope!"
―Am and Karre[2]
The Twins duel

Karre and Am fought for control of the kyber crystal.

Before Karre could get far, Am used the Force to pull back the power core while standing on the surface of the Star Destroyer. As Karre grabbed on to it, both he and the core were pulled out of the X-wing, which crashed onto the Star Destroyer. As Karre fell onto the ship's surface, he let go of the power core, which Am pulled toward her. Before it reached her, Karre stood and pulled the core back toward him. Both twins attempted to pull the power core toward themselves, eventually causing it to shatter and expose the kyber crystal within it. As they continued to struggle for control of the crystal, Am declared that it was a beacon of hope for the galaxy, to which Karre responded that it would only bring despair.[2]

As the twins intensified their efforts to take the crystal, first Am, and then Karre, began striking the crystal with Force lightning, causing it to resonate. The kyber crystal eventually broke in two, sending Am's lighting back at her, destroying her helmet, and then exploding. In the aftermath of the explosion, both twins saw the vision of Am's death that only Karre had seen previously. Karre told Am about his vision of her and explained his motivation for stealing the crystal, saying that he knew Am would not have listened to him if he had tried to tell her before. In response, Am laughed, telling Karre she did not fear death and reminded him of the purpose of their birth as the vision ended. Karre then attempted to persuade his sister not to use the kyber crystal's power, but Am ignored his warning and placed the crystal in her armor. Four mechanical arms with long lightwhips sprouted from her armor, and her two lightsabers also extended to become lightwhips.[2]

Am-Karre-Fight-THETWINS

The twins dueled on the surface of the Star Destroyer.

As Am began slicing around him with her lightwhips, Karre ran and took cover. He then placed a fragment of the shattered kyber crystal into his lightsaber just before Am attacked with her six lightwhips, destroying his cover. However, the beams became entangled around Karre's lightsaber and after pulling Am slightly toward him, he swung his blade, cutting the lightwhip's energy beams apart. Am responded by changing her six weapons back to standard lightsabers. Karre then significantly extended the length of his lightsaber and leaped at Am, but she blocked his attack and kicked at him with a lightsaber-like blade in her boot, which Karre dodged. He then attacked her again, but she once again blocked and then forced Karre back until she was able to launch an attack that threw him off the ship's surface and into space.[2]

Destroying the kyber crystal[]

"If we don't destroy that thing as quickly as possible, it will kill her. However, it would take a massive amount of power to do that. What if I'm not strong enough to save her? What do I do?"
―Karre, to R-DUO[2]
KarreRidingXwing

Karre used his lightsaber and his X-wing's hyperdrive to save Am.

After being launched by Am, Karre was caught by R-DUO on the outside of their X-wing. After being rescued, he turned to see Am screaming and being constricted by dark energy. He realized that she had released too much power and could no longer control it, overloading her armor. When Karre told R-DUO that he needed to destroy it or she would die, but he did not have enough power to do so, R-DUO suggested using the X-wing's hyperdrive. Karre agreed with the idea but was not sure if he could do something so reckless. In response, R-DUO suddenly turned the X-wing around and piloted it toward the Star Destroyer. As it approached Am, Karre stood on the outside of the starfighter and ignited his lightsaber, causing several massive beams of various colors to appear and then coalesce into a single larger beam.[2]

As the X-wing flew upside down toward Am, Karre's lightsaber cut through the Star Destroyer, but as it reached Am, she blocked the attack with her own lightsabers. She screamed at Karre that their life's mission would be lost if the crystal was destroyed, but Karre replied that was not true, telling her not to live for someone else. At Karre's command, R-DUO activated the starfighter's hyperdrive, allowing Karre's lightsaber to push past Am's lightsabers. As it did, Karre's blade briefly narrowed, cutting through Am's armor and destroying the crystal, before returning to its full size and slicing one half of the Star Destroyer in two. Karre's X-wing then completed its jump to hyperspace.[2]

After exiting hyperspace, Karre's X-wing crashed on[2] the planet[8] Tatooine.[1] Karre awoke on top of the ship, which was being scavenged by Jawas. He told R-DUO that they would find Am and the purpose of their creation and reassured R-DUO that she was alive as he watched the twin suns rise.[2]

Personality and traits[]

"She's out there. Yeah, she's alive. I can feel it. After all, she is my twin sister."
―Karre, to R-DUO[2]

Karre was a human male clone with grey eyes, blond hair, and light skin.[1] Although he was created to rule the galaxy, Karre chose to reject his destiny because of his love for his twin sister[4] and turned to the light side of the Force to save her.[9] He was a strong believer in choosing one's own destiny and forging one's own path.[4] After arriving on Tatooine, he still had hope for his sister and the future.[10] He was friends with R-DUO and considered him to be the perfect partner to win a large battle.[5]

Powers and abilities[]

"It was through the force that I was able to see the future that awaits you, Sister."
―Karre, to Am[2]

Because of advances in cloning technology, Karre was capable of surviving in outer space unaided and was scientifically designed to channel power.[1] He was capable of using Force Stasis, telekinesis, and blue Force lightning, and he also had visions of the future.[2] He was less powerful than Am, but he was still able to defeat her. Although he wielded the dark side, he was not a Sith and was not trained in the Sith traditions.[1]

Equipment[]

"I am concerned about the effect this prototype dark armor could have on your physical body, as well as that of your brother."
―B-2ON, to Am[2]

Karre wore a suit of black prototype dark armor, which included a helmet and a cape and was powered by dark energy. Underneath he wore black clothing with white sleeves, and he also wore boots. He wielded a lightsaber that had a blue and red blade, the length of which could be significantly increased. Karre used a T-X-wing starfighter and had a throne room aboard the Gemini-class Star Destroyer.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Milestones[]

"For "THE TWINS" I wanted to do something opposite from A New Hope. Luke is born to nothing but gains everything. This is the Star Wars way, to be the Chosen One. I saw Karre as someone who was born to everything but becomes no one. From birth he was raised to be a new Dark Lord in the Imperial Army. Instead, he rejects this path."
―Hiromi Wakabayashi[1]

Concept art of Karre

Karre first appeared in "THE TWINS," a short film written by Hiromi Wakabayashi, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, and released as part of the first volume of the non-canon Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Studio Trigger,[2] was released on Disney+ on September 22, 2021.[11] Prior to the short's release, Karre was introduced in a video uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on July 3, 2021.[12] He was then identified in a StarWars.com article on August 17 of that year. Karre was voiced by Junya Enoki in the original Japanese version of the short and by Neil Patrick Harris in the English dub.[13] The soundtrack for the short, which was composed by Michiru Ōshima[14] and released for streaming on October 15, 2021,[15] included a track titled "Choose Your Own Destiny (Karre's Theme)".[14]

In the manga adaptation of the short, by Keisuke Sato and originally published in Big Gangan Vol.09[6] on August 25, 2022,[16] Sato included an omake that features Karre and was clarified to be the artist's imagination. In the bonus scene, Karre tells R-DUO that they need a new ship after crashing on Tatooine. They then encounter a Rodian claiming to be a kind person passing by who offers to give Karre a lift to the nearest town. Although R-Duo tells Karre he has a bad feeling, Karre thanks the Rodian and places a bag with the credit symbol on his speeder. The Rodian then speeds off with the bag and leaves Karre behind, who chases after him.[6]

Design and influences[]

"Imaishi-san at Trigger really dug into his own style and the "twin" themes with Luke and Leia to create dark-side twins Karre and Am. While this set of twins has a destiny that is seemingly already written, with them both sitting up on their thrones on a giant Twin Star Destroyer, Karre has a crisis of conscience born out of love for his sister that drives his choice."
―Executive producer Josh Rimes[4]

Concept art of Karre by SUSHIO and Shigeto Koyama

Concept art of Karre was designed by SUSHIO and revisions and color references were done by Shigeto Koyama.[17] While designing Karre and Am, Koyama explained he did not consider whether the characters were good or evil and instead visualized the core of the characters. Karre's dark armor is based on Ralph McQuarrie's concept designs for the Sith Lord Darth Vader, and his costume after shredding his armor was influenced by[1] smuggler[8] Han Solo, a character loved by Imaishi, as well as the outfits worn by[1] the Jedi[8] Luke Skywalker in[1] the 1977 film[18] A New Hope, and Anakin Skywalker in[1] the 2002 film[18] Attack of the Clones and[1] the 2005 film[18] Revenge of the Sith. The hilt of Karre's lightsaber was influenced by the lightsaber that Luke inherited from Anakin. Karre has a sharp design associated with Studio Trigger[1] and resembles the character Lio from Trigger's[4] 2019[19] film Promare, which was also directed by Imaishi.[4]

The duel between Karre and Am was inspired by the battle of Gojo Ohashi, a Japanese Heian period legend in which the warrior-monk Saitō Musashibō Benkei met the young Minamoto Yoshitsune on Gojo Ohashi bridge. Although Benkei was more powerful, Yoshitune won their battle. Similarly, Am was more powerful than Karre, but he was still able to defeat her.[1] Imaishi planned the fight in his head, saying that he had a stock of fight scene ideas in his head and picked the ones that were best for Star Wars. He also explained that Karre attacked upside down because it looked visually unique and because, by attacking in that way, he would damage the crystal but not hurt Am.[20]

Wakabayashi wanted to do something that was the opposite of A New Hope, explaining that Luke was born to nothing but gained everything, while Karre was born to everything but became no one.[1] Karre and Am are similar to a flipped version of Luke and his twin sister Leia. Twins are a classic Star Wars theme, but the short subverts the motif by following twins aligned with the dark side. Karre's drive to protect those he loves is similar to Luke and Anakin's, but unlike them, he does so from a position of power.[4] His friendship with R-DUO is intended to mirror the friendship between Luke and the droid R2-D2 in A New Hope.[1]
