This lightsaber was created and wielded by the Cerean Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi. While a Jedi Knight, Mundi's blade was purple. After achieving the rank of Master, during the Clone Wars and until Mundi's death on Mygeeto, the blade was blue.
History[]
During his apprenticeship to Jedi Master Yoda, the Cerean Jedi Ki-Adi-Mundi wielded a green-bladed lightsaber with a ridged, cylindrical, gray hilt. Mundi practiced lightsaber combat against Marksman-H combat remotes with the weapon[4] of his own construction,[1] and following his ascension to the rank of Jedi Knight[5] after 21 years of training, carried it upon his return to his homeworld of Cerea[2] around 67 BBY.[6]
By 32 BBY, shortly before his appointment to the Jedi High Council,[7] the blade of Mundi's saber had taken on a purple hue, though its hilt remained unchanged from its earlier iteration.[5] At this time, the lightsaber was seized from Ki-Adi-Mundi's person by Maj-Odo-Nomor, a Cerean youth, who inadvertently took a life with the weapon.[8] While Mundi investigated the crime, the Cerean Council of Elders held his lightsaber as evidence.[9]
Ki-Adi-Mundi was trained as a Jedi Guardian and was considered one of the top ten swordsmen in the Jedi Order. He used a one-handed style during combat which was possibly Makashi. During his duel with General Grievous, he used the Ataru opening stance. Notably, Mundi was the last Jedi standing during the grueling duel with Grievous on Hypori despite being exhausted from the battle that preceded it and while facing a style of lightsaber combat never before encountered by the Order. Also Mundi's lightsaber was briefly taken by Grievous, forcing him to use one of the cyborg's green lightsabers on his belt, but Mundi managed to recover his lightsaber when help arrived.[3] Later, the Cerean proved his skills in a duel with the Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress, whom he forced into retreat.[10] Mundi continued to wield his blue-bladed lightsaber for the rest of the war until he was killed during the execution of Order 66 on Mygeeto.
Behind the scenes[]
While other issues of Star Wars: Republic: Prelude to Rebellion portray Mundi's lightsaber with a purple blade in their "present"-set sections, limiting its green-bladed appearance to the chronologically earlier Star Wars: Republic: Vow of Justice back-up story,[2] the series' third issue depicts the lightsaber with a green blade in both the present setting and flashbacks.[4]
