Opening crawl[]

COMMENCEMENT
"PART 3 (OF SIX)"
Yesterday, the only fear ZAYNE CARRICK had was that
he wouldn't be elevated to Knighthood with his fellow
Padawans. Today, he fears for his life.

After discovering his friends dead at the feet of their
own Masters, Zayne runs, aided only by GRYPH, a
small-time Snivvian con artist. But where can they go?
The Masters are the law on Taris—and they've told
the world that Zayne killed the Padawans.

His only hope lies offworld, retracing the steps of his
training to find out what it was he and his friends had
seen that marked them for death. But escape from Taris
leads first to the wretched Undercity—a destination
the Masters have already foreseen…

Plot summary[]

After stowing aboard a garbage carrier in the Lower City and surviving a scuffle with a Black Vulkars crew, Gryph leads Zayne to an area known as Junk Junction. Meanwhile, the Jedi pursuing them foolishly fall for a scheme of Gryph's that leads them into the Undercity.

In the Junction, the duo are attacked by an Arkanian known as Jarael and ordered to leave. She rationalizes her actions to the duo by informing them that because of the massacre, Lhosan Industries (a major employer in the Lower City) has decided to relocate to a safer planet. At this time, Gryph spots the man he came to see, Camper, and asks for his assistance in smuggling them off the planet. Camper refuses to help the fugitives escape, however, and ignores Gryph's pleas for help.

At that moment, Taris Civil Authorities and the Jedi pursuing Zayne and Gryph swoop in on a gunship and order them to surrender. Camper and Jarael rush to get out of the area quickly, not caring that Gryph and Zayne follow them. Revealing the junk shop to be a junk hauler, the four escape the planet. The escape is short-lived, however, as the ill-equipped hauler loses power just as an orbital patrol ship approaches.
