- "Sir, Resistance fighters. We need more troops."
"Pull the division out. Forget the droid. We have what we need." - ―A stormtrooper captain and Kylo Ren
A division of the First Order Stormtrooper Corps served under the dark warrior Kylo Ren, whose unique status allowed him to command stormtroopers despite existing outside of the military chain of command. In the year 34 ABY, the division followed Ren to the planets Jakku and Takodana where they, in turn, exterminated a village and laid siege to Maz Kanata's castle.
On both occasions, they tried to acquire the map to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Although the map they sought had fallen into the possession of the Resistance droid BB-8, Ren ultimately abandoned his troops' efforts to capture it, having learned that the map's contents were also in the mind of Rey—a Jakku scavenger whom he apprehended shortly after the arrival of Resistance T-70 X-wing fighters on Takodana.
History
Massacre of Tuanul
- "Sir, the villagers?"
"Kill them all." - ―Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren
By 34 ABY, thirty years after the Battle of Endor,[2] Kylo Ren had come into the service of the First Order, serving as its warlord and champion as well as Supreme Leader Snoke's apprentice in the dark side of the Force.[3] As a result of his unique status, Ren wielded the authority to command First Order soldiers despite lacking an official rank in the First Order military hierarchy[4] In addition, he had direct command over a division of the elite Stormtrooper Corps, which accompanied him during the hunt for the last Jedi Luke Skywalker.[1]
In the waning days of the cold war, a navigational chart that revealed the location of Skywalker's place of exile had fallen into Ren's posession. However, it was incomplete. Having learned that the last fragment was in the hands of Lor San Tekka, a member of the Church of the Force, Ren's division deployed to the barren planet Jakku. The stormtroopers, including trooper 1138 and FN-2187, overwhelmed the defenders of the village Tuanul, although FN-2003 was fatally wounded during the brief skirmish. Ultimately, the stormtroopers rounded up the villagers and even captured San Tekka, who was executed by Ren after failing to cooperate. Upon aprehending Commander Poe Dameron of the Resistance, Ren ordered Captain Phasma to have their troops kill all of San Tekka's followers. With the exception of FN-2187, the soldiers complied by opening fire into the crowd of villagers.[1]
Battle of Takodana
- "Request air support."
- ―A stormtrooper officer, in response to the Resistance
Shortly after the end of the cold war, Ren's troops followed their leader to the planet Takodana, having learned that the map they sought had fallen into the possession of Dameron's astromech droid, BB-8 which they tracked to a castle owned by Maz Kanata. During the initial battle, FN-2199 confronted his former comrade FN-2187, who deserted the military after witnessing the massacre of Tuanul, and challenged him to single combat. Although the trooper gained the upper hand against the deserter, FN-2199 was killed as a result of Han Solo's interference. The situation was further complicated by the arrival of a squadron of Resistance T-70 X-wing fighters. The division requested additional troops and air support, but by then their commander encountered Rey, a Jakku scavenger who had already seen the map fragment in BB-8's memory bank. As such, Ren abandoned his search for the droid and ordered his division to withdraw from Takodana, having chosen to bring the scavenger with him to Starkiller Base for interrogation.[1]
Specialization
The division had several types of specialized infantry with standard stormtroopers been the most numerous. Besides that was flametrooper and megablaster heavy assault trooper the main mobile heavy weapons personal. And the stormtrooper gunner providing fire support from the atmospheric assault landers. The riot control stormtrooper was the main melee combat specialist, although it was not impossible for the rest of them to throw a punch.[1][5]
Equipment
To fulfill their respective role within the division, specific weapons and equipment was issued to each individual member. Flametrooper used the D-93 Incinerator flamethrowers. While the megablaster heavy assault trooper used FWMB-10 repeating blaster. Riot troopers carried a Z6 riot control baton and one riot shield. And stormtrooper gunners operated F-Z0 antipersonnel blaster cannons. More common equipment included F-11D blaster rifle, which was carried by surprising number of the stormtroopers. Most offices carried one SE-44C blaster pistols along with some troops.[1][5]
