- "Tattooing is my life. It saved me from some troubled times and I'm thankful everyday that I get to create art for a living."
- ―L'ain, about her career
L'ain Freefall was born on January 13, 1984 to a British Chinese family. She has a sister, brother, and a son named Hiro. Freefall was bullied throughout her education, due to the color of her skin. She fell in love with tattoos at the age of eight, and got her first when she was fifteen.
Freefall took up the profession of a tattoo artist as a career. While working as a make-up artist, she completed an unpaid tattooing apprenticeship. In 2009, she pursued her tattoo work full-time. While she resides in London, England, she also travels to tattoo studios internationally as part of her work. Her home tattoo studio, Kilburn Original Tattoo, is based in London. In 2017, she did a modeling job for Doc Martens shoes.
In 2018, Freefall portrayed Naley Frifa in Solo: A Star Wars Story, a Star Wars Anthology film. She was pleased with the role, and took time to seek out where glimpses of her could be seen in scenes. Her character's name was revealed in the reference book Solo: A Star Wars Story The Official Guide written by Pablo Hidalgo, which was released the same day. She poses as Frifa within it, and her chest and torso tattoos are noted to represent a stylized hyperspace simu-tunnel.
