The lightsaber wielded by Lacunas Subartuk, a legendary member of the Jedi Order, had a lasting impact on later lightsabers,[1] as the design of its hilt became a generic type during the last decades of the Galactic Republic.[2] Several Jedi Knights such as Plo Koon and Luminara Unduli built their respective sabers to resemble Subartuk's.[1] Key features of Subartuk's design included a radiator casing segment in the shape of a truncated cone,[2] a ridged handgrip, and a blade modulation circuitry.[3] The Sith lightsaber built by Darth Maul, although based on the Iridonia Zhaboka,[4] had similar similar aesthetics.[3] The design would later go on to Sentinelhilt in the New Jedi Order founded by Luke Skywalker.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the prequel trilogy of Star Wars, main characters like Anakin Skywalker,[5] Qui-Gon Jinn,[6] Obi-Wan Kenobi,[7] and Yoda had unique lightsabers.[8] However, the background Jedi shown in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones[9] and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith were equipped with generic lightsaber hilts.[10]
One of those generic hilts was created for the character of Mace Windu in the days of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and was reused by other, less prominent characters like Plo Koon and Luminara Unduli. In Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary, Unduli's weapon was described as having a "common design."[2] In the later book Star Wars: Lightsabers: A Guide to Weapons of the Force, that design was clarified as having originated with Lacunas Subartuk.[1]
